I've beta tested all versions since 7, including the release candidates (which is what I assume you mean by 'preview version') and have never seen the capability that you describe. Perhaps you are thinking of some other software?
I know what you mean.
I was having the same problem trying to paste in the "info preview" window to change the file icon.
See - <LINK_TEXT text="http://archicad-talk.graphisoft.com/vie ... ght=#94485">http://archicad-talk.graphisoft.com/viewtopic.php?p=94485&highlight=#94485</LINK_TEXT>

There is now a Registry Key that you can alter (Windows this is - not sure about Macs).

You will need to find this key.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Graphisoft\ArchiCAD\ArchiCAD 11.0.0 AUS R1\Input

Then set "Copy to picture also" to 1 (one).

Now you will be able to copy and paste to Excel or the preview window or where ever you want by selecting or marqueeing from Archicad.

Be cautious though - adjusting the registry is not recommended.
I believe GS added this key as a fix to the problem of Archicad sometimes freezing when you copy and paste.
Setting it to 1 (one) may cuase the freezing to occur occationally.
I haven't had sufficient time to test this yet but so far have had no issues.
I only found out about this last week though.
