I have used a Wacom Intuos 9x12 for several years. It comes with a cordless mouse (5 button + scroll wheel) and the stylus (pen). I used the mouse for awhile, but prefer a trackball which I always use with AC and all other software except when in Photoshop, Piranesi, etc., where I use the pressure sensitive stylus. I've had no trouble with the Wacom driver, which co-exists problem-free with my Kensington trackball software. I would recommend Wacom products highly.

I had a 9x12 wacom which I liked very much... except I never used the whole thing and it was just too big. I sold it, but will get a smaller one just for the pen. The wacom mouse was very nice and light. A smaller tablet would work just as well unless you need to trace over something, which I never did. You can set the display to the tablet, so I ended up using about 1/4 of the actual 9x12, and the rest was in the way. The only problem with the mouse is I would wonder why it wouldn't work to look down and see I was off the area that actually picks up input. They have a wide border that was a problem for me. So, I would recommend a smaller one.

For typical architectural work, I agree that a 9x12 is not necessary-and if you are short on desk space, a hindrance. However, for the creation of artwork in Painter, which is why I bought mine, I would not consider one smaller.

If you have access to a tablet that you could try out, I think it would be very beneficial. For me, using a stylus in AC is not efficient. With a mouse or trackball, you can take your hand away to use the keyboard and you just move your hand back to it to continue mousing or trackballing. With a stylus, you have to either lay it down or return it to its stand. When you pick it back up, unlike a pencil, it has to be positioned so the button is in the correct location. A pretty cumbersome situation.

When drawing freeform and needing pressure sensitive input, such as in Photoshop, Painter, etc., the stylus and tablet are the only way to go. Hope this helps.
May I just add this comment from my personnal experience : I've bought several years ago a Wacom Intuos A5 that I found at that time too big to work with : the wacom driver allowed me to reduce the active region of the tablet to correspond to the screen so I had this too big tablet that I used only 1/4 of... Until I added a second screen on my PC as the aspect ratio of both screen combined isn't the same as the total available tablet surface I use now the half upper part of the tablet, corresponding at 2 horizontal screens.

I tried recently a Wacom Graphire 2 A6 tablet and found definitely this size much too small inducing a lack of precision in work... even on 1 single screen. If you have space on your desktop, I would recommend buying an A5 and redefining the active area following your needs...
