They had said Read & Write previously, but applying it to the whole folder was what solved it. Thank you!

<T>When I try to install the Hotfix 6 on archicad17 I get an error message saying "Applications/Graphisoft/ArchiCAD 17 is not writable"

Any idea why this might be?</T>

Your operating system or some other installed utility program does not allow you to write into that folder.
You should check the permission setting for that folder (or sometimes its parent folder?).

It doesn't seem to be a permissions error - the folders and parent foldsrs say 'read and write' We have 4 computers of same spec running this software. 2 of us have updated successfully and 2 have not!? Mysterious...

select the folder and use "Command+i" and edit the permissions so that you can read and write. Check in the gear icon and select apply to all.
