I went to store to test 5k imac retina. To my suprise iMac can be run at full 5k resolution making all user interface dialogs tiny. Unreadable from traditional viewing distances. Not for me.

ArchiCad can be downloaded, installed and run on demo mode at store. Even better, bring your own dongle with you. And your own PLN files.

HiDpi or best for retina iMac looks the same as old 27" iMac, except sharper. And how about ArchiCad, looks stellar. Dimension lines, fills, walls - beautiful! This is wonderful hardware indeed. And about the 2d speed. Tolerable or even fine. I am old and have used ArchiCad since 3.x so I can tolerate slowness - did not have 'not slow' testbed hardware next to retina iMac. But I recommend to test ArchiCad at store. Please write your experience to followers here. And Graphisoft, please write to compared to what the speed is slow. And reveal some timetables - not before Ac19 is valid answer. At least I can live with it.

And this was my first run with AC18 - CineRender was terrible slow on retina iMac. I was quite ok with 2d and open gl 3d was smooth. 2d was not instantly there, but is it on some hardware? And CineRender- only thing that was too slow to be worked with. And pre set materials were off too, Artlantis is faster and you see what you get.

My point is that 2d might not be an issue for your projects. 3d open gl is much better than i hoped for. And CineRender is painfully slow.

Yeah I was disappointed to see that. Especially when ArchicAD and Apple worked closely together 15 years ago... AutoCAD in this respect seems like 'the future', but the core of the software is still way in the past.

Come on ArchiCAD, make some BIG updates... Full screen (for 2 screen support), new user interface and retina support. If you look over the past 5 ArchiCAD release, nothing has changed interface wise... this worries me.

We are definietly going to support Retina Display. (We were the first to support Retina Display on the IPad) There are a few modifications we have to do to ArchiCAD to make it happen. First, there are a couple of small adjustments we need to do to make the graphical user interface work properly in HiDPI mode. We have already made these adjustments in ArchiCAD 16, and we are going to release a Hotfix for ArchiCAD 15 with these fixes.

Later this summer we are going to release an update for ArchiCAD 16 that makes it fully HiDPI-compliant - meaning that all ArchiCAD 2D/3D windows will display the model in high resolution.

We will keep you updated here as development progresses.

Hopefully the palettes will get smaller, rather than staying the same relative size, and just getting sharper. That's the only way we'll get extra usable screen space out of the 15" display (now that the 17" MBP is no more).

For example, I use a 17" MBP and 30" Apple Cinema Display at the office(2560x1600). When I'm working at home just on the MBP (1920x1200), I have to use a different Work Environment to get everything on one, smaller screen.

To be able to switch from a 2880x1800 Retina Display MBP to a 30" display, or any other machine, it would be great if AC's palettes simply had, say, three scales. Rather than rearranging the Work Environment for different displays (including workstations in our office with a 21" and 23" or two 23" displays) it would be much more convenient to simply have one office WE and scale it to the display (or user preferences to have, say tiny tiny icons).

They seem to be in hot demand so I've ordered one. I had a play in the shop. It is interesting you can't actually pick a resolution, they just have 5 options: best for retina, then you have two options either side to make it bigger or smaller.....

There's a good overview here: http://blog.xero.com/2012/07/resolution/

I got my Retina MBP today and as stated, the screen is amazing. The text in ArchiCAD 15 looks like text on paper. But I just noticed that pop-out selections in parameters do not work.
The work around is to select the ArchiCAD application from the ArchiCAD 15 folder, 'get info' using command 'I' then tick 'Open in low resolution'. When you start ArchiCAD, text now shows blurry but the pop-out selection lists will now work. Note : This is in 'Lion'. The Archiwiki entry states this as being in 'Mountain' Lion only.
This screen show show what the pop-outs look like with 'Open in low resolution' ticked. Without it ticked, you get zip.

Not sure why it would be an issue? If the graphics card can handle 4K, then any app SHOULD be able to run OK, too. If the pixel density is too small (e.g., small 4K monitor) - then I would imagine it would be impossible to read the palettes text at native resolution.

It should work the same as Macs with retina display, the OS should be able to keep things readable.

Archicad 18-14 runs very poorly in 2D running a 4K monitor.

I have tried a new 12 core Mac Pro with dual AMD FirePro D700's.
I have also tried a tricked out Retina MacBook Pro.

I have tried both the 32" Asus and 32" Dell 4K monitors.

Both of these machines run Archicad well in the 3D window, especially the 12 core. However they both run very poorly in 2D. Feedback and execution are painstakingly slow.

The only way to get tolerable feedback and execution on either machine is to size your 2D window to about 10"x12".

I will be returning the monitor because it is of little use at this point.
