Thanks to both of you for advice. I increased the RAM from 256 to 768.
AC 8.1 loaded and runs on XP Home with no troubles at all. No known
problems after running for a week now.

Thanks again,

This is my first post here. My daughter wants to use AC 8.1 but she has
currently only 256 MB dual channel DDR SDRAM. Will AC 8.1 run with
this ? Thanks for any help you can provide.

If your running XP Pro with only 256mb....that's the minimum memory. I mean minimum. If your multitasking, your gonna take a hit performance wise, if you have anything less. You can never have too much memory.
Up it to a min of 1GB if you can.
Your 3D window relies on a decent gaming or other 3D cad card as well. Have one with 128mb of memory or better.

As Antonin says, 256 is the minimum for XP itself, really. AC 8.1 runs just fine on my 1GHz laptop which has 512MB and a 32MB nVidia graphics card. More is better, naturally - up to Antonin's list, or my machine listed below. All depends on how big her models will be and how many other programs she'll run at the same time.
I should have mentioned that she is running XP Home version, which is
another topic on this forum. Thanks for the information on this. We will
see about a memory upgrade for her. I may try AC 8.1 on her machine
with the idea that some upgrades will probably be necessary.

Many thanks,
