Try reducing a "supersafe" autosave to the next position.

What exactly is the problem?
What hardware are you using? (CPU, RAM, Video Card and Video Memory, 64-Bit)?
What operating system are you on?
Where exactly do you experience the slowdown?

Regeneration slow (very slow) windows in 3d (the changes made in the update (material, subtractions, ...)

CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
DDR2 8192 MBytes
ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 MB (256-bit)
Win 8 64-bit

Have you updated your video card driver very recently?
How large is your file?
What's your polygon count?
Window>Palettes

As already hinted by someone else, it would seem like your video card might be the culprit here.

Aside from the updates (which might have limited effect), the video card itself seems to be a little on the low-end side, at least in terms of the video memory.
Personally, I would recommend nothing less than 1GB video memory if you don't want to run into slow-downs and lags in the 3D window.
Although I'm not as big a fan of ATI myself.

Your CPU seems to be fine, although it can never hurt to spring for more Memory chips and cores, if you can afford to.

Other than that, just make sure all your software and drivers are up to date (especially the video card and OS updates (.NET etc)) and if it's still slow then you might have a more serious issue that you might want to let a GS tech guy know about.

And since I'm running a card with only 256 Megatrons in video for four years [and without a problem in Archicad 16], you might want to experiment with settings before buying a new card since good problem-solvers always look for a software solution before paying out serious coin for hardware.

Rudimentary things like:

• avoiding internal engine for 3D rendering: use OpenGL instead. You only use internal hidden line rendering to export perspective line drawings….
• avoiding shadow casting - takes extra time to calculate.
• avoid anti-aliasing in 3D rendering - more time and some cards do poorly at it.

See project settings.

Also: Avoid dissing the product if you seek quality assistance in problem-solving, since most problems originate with an uninformed user. Not that I'm excusing Archicad's more serious flaws, but you usually only run into them once you are doing real work.

To me it may also be that he is on Windows 8.
No ArchiCAD version has been tested and verified to work on Windows 8 yet. Who knows about the quality of Windows 8 itself or the quality of graphics drivers written for it since the whole operating system is on the market for only a few weeks now.
I would not be surprised if these problems had to do with the "newness" of Windows 8.
