I have had no difficulties converting AC7 projects into AC8.1 (there were significant problems with 8.0).

You should probably convert the library parts (though I have used older parts without any trouble). I have created two separate libraries; one for 7 and another with the converted parts for 8.1.

I recommend switching all projects to 8.1 except those that are nearly complete. Certainly switch anything that is in schematic or design development phase. Projects in early CD phase are probably also worth switching. The sooner you make the full transition the better.

If you are not already, use PlotMaker 3.1 for everything. Just import the old layouts into a new layout book.

All your settings such as layers, quickviews etc. will work as expected. There are no issues with any of these as far as I know.

If you have already been using Publisher in AC7 the transition should be pretty much seamless, even for projects in late CD phase.

The main work for you will just be learning all the new tools and features and getting the most out of them. I am sure others will chime in with their own experiences. Except for slow library loading over the network, my experience with 8.1 has been uniformly positive.

I am about to take the small step, giant leap. Would you advise me on the three (five, ten?) *DO*s and *DON'T*s for a successful transition? Or perhaps point me to where I can find a good transition guide.

I have projects I will keep developing on 7.0. So I will be running both programs on the same machine, if there is no problem with that. I have read I should never try to take a 7.0 project to 8, although I am not sure if there has been any change to that with 8.1. And I have quite a few objects I absolutely need and I am not sure what I should do about them. Then there is the layers-quickviews-favorites thing, which I wonder I can somehow beam up to eight without having to set it all up from scratch.

All panic-relief advice will be more than welcome.

I agree, I haven't had any problems transfering projects over from AC 7.0 to AC 8.0/8.1

The one problem I do have, though, is I can not get the file association to switch to open in AC 8.1. I use OS X Panther and use the 'change all' button in Get Info, but it always switches back....

Anyone have any ideas?

i seem to recall having a conversation with somebody who thought that updating the prebindings would fix this. can't recall if i ever tested it . . .

if you want to give it a go, open your terminal and type:

sudo update_prebinding -root / -force

hit return, enter your password, and return again.

you'll see lines of text scrolling up your screen - don't worry! it takes about 5 minutes maybe to complete. it is basically forcing the OS to go through the application files and make sure that they're correctly linked together. it can't do any harm and is useful to do as a maintenance task every few months if you feel the computer slowing down.

if you feel a bit nervous about using the terminal (use at your own risk!) you can always get hold of simple system maintenance applications such as cocktail to run them for you from a graphical user interface.

let me know if it works . . . ?
