If you do not live in a part of the world where there are high-res photographs, then there is just a big pixel-blurb to place your building on. I understand it's nice to have it fit in the global picture, but most designs by architects don't have that much urban scale into it.

But I imagine you're working on design on an urban level, so maybe it is more usefull then...

Hi Stefan,

While we're fortunate in much of (but not all of) the US and various major world cities to have pretty good detail in GE, I agree that the resolution for immediate context is better for urban level or campus planning.

But, I find it extremely useful for projecting view corridors for any project in mountainous terrain, such as we have here in Sandpoint. We can show the client if/where the view through the mountains to the lake will be, etc. This is the example I posted elsewhere on the forum when the SketchUp Google Earth plug-in beta was released. (I exported my ArchiCAD model to SketchUp and from there to Google Earth.)

Naturally, this doesn't help anyone in relatively flat locales. <E>😉</E>

For those urban areas where GE has 3D mass models of the major buildings, even though the city is flat, the GE context can be useful for sunlight/view studies as well...

It is also nice that the model info can be emailed to a client, and they can open Google Earth with the model in place and browse in whatever way amuses them (or is useful)... <E>😉</E>

The main reason is I can use all the advantages of AC (accuracy, complex modelling, lib parts, existing knowledge) over the clunky controls of Sketchup or similar.

As Karl has mentioned its a fantastic tool for sending models/ideas to clients.

The low res areas can be overcome by overlaying aerial maps .. see for chch overlay.

It's also a fantastic way to research. model and experience buildings in there proposed context .. here's a quick play we had with Foster's MILLENIUM TOWER.

or some simple placemarks of some current projects.

.. I would love to see a direct plug-in from AC as Sketchup are doing!!??!!

As the resolution gets better and better (who knows what the intellegence satelittes are like now- I heard they are hubble telescopes pointed at earth) governments will take more and more control. If I could trust governments that might be OK but can you?
wow .. my daughter asked .. is that where the princesses live??

yeh .. GE could do with an overlay in that area .. if you can find an aerial (many local authorities have them on their websites these days) it is very easy to create an overlay in GE .. see this christchurch example in medium res
or this high res

keep in touch with your 3D model progress .. why the draw in SU? why not draw and model in AC then import with free Su plug-in and then export to GE? .. much easier .. SU is very clumsy with large files.

All,

I am glad to inform you that the native ArchiCAD 9 compatible Google Earth add-on is available for download. Although, it is still in beta phase, we would like to share it with you, and ask for your contribution in the testing and evaluation process. Please, feel free to share your thoughts either in this thread or in a personal message. All comments are welcome, I am eager to get your feedback how we can make this tiny add-on as useful as possible.

Usage: The Google Earth – ArchiCAD data exchange is quite similar to Sketchup:

- Download the attached GE.zip and unpack it.

- Backup and then replace the “jack.dll” file in your ArchiCAD 9 folder and copy the “Google Earth In-Out.apx” under the [Add-Ons\Import-Export] folder.

- Download and install the latest Google Earth program (<S></S>http://earth.google.com<E></E>)

- Create Google Earth placemarks, polygons, or paths. (Polygons and paths can be generated from Google Earth Plus or Pro) and export them.

- In ArchiCAD you can either open or merge the Google Earth KMZ/KML file.

- Once you have positioned your model, switch to 3D view and save your work into Google Earth format.

It’s quite simple, isn’t it?

Note: Macintosh platform is not supported yet, but we will soon release the compatible version.

FANTASTIC .. works a treat .. we posted our first results at ZNO today, a series of buildings in Cathedral square Christchurch, NZ. They vary from heavily detailed to a booleaned block.

We will be re-scripting the KML's we have posted at ZNO to date .. we also have some very interesting 3D models in progress from around the world .. keep watchin!

Have been in discussion with SKETCHUP boys in last few weeks over AC to SU issues .. dropped this on them today .. not happy .....
Why would you get rid of them? They can work pretty well alongside ArchiCAD...

I've been aware of the Graphisoft-Google Earth beta-exporter, but assumed information was to be kept private untill released... but now that they officially mention it here, that is not a problem anymore.

We noticed in testing exporting from Archicad PC to Google Earth, and chooing "by layer" rather than "by story" gets an error:
Parser error, invalid charcter
Has anyone run into this? We tried multiple files and multiple machines, with the same result. By default now we save by story.
