Just an idea: does the harddisk have partitions on it? How much free space is there? How big is your swap file in windows, and in InternetExplorer? It can be the slow harddrive IMHO

I hope, it helps!
Just to check, try once to turn off all security applications to see if it matters. ArchiCAD does touch quite a few files while opening (even so if the library is not a PLA but individual files), and if a virus checker is monitoring all I/O actions -and does it slow- then that could be a problem.

Following up on Greg and Balazs' suggestions further: since you are on XP, when AC 9 starts up, there is an 'issue' that it installs a printer driver (Amyuni PDF) every single time. This creates a system restore point. Your security settings may be protecting you from driver installations, perhaps, too.

So, yes, definitely disable all security apps and see what happens.

Another possibility, mentioned by others elsewhere, is that you might have a mapped network drive that is not connected.

Also: is anything else running on your computer when you start AC (you mention many other applications). Given your 512MB memory, a lot of swapping could be taking place and perhaps your hard disk is fragmented and/or as Balazs wonders, tight on space.

Karl

PS Also, once you resolve this issue, 512MB RAM is the minimum for XP Pro to perform reasonably. Things will run OK, but you will be happier if you can boost your memory.

Thank you - merry christmas to you and your families I switched off Norton Security 2004 (including Anti Virus) and spybot (search and destroy) it was really a security program now it needs about 10 seconds to start archicad 9, I will find out which settings are responsible for this problem and will post it to you all.
First Test: Norton Internet Security is blocking the start 25 minutes... I will have to make a better configuration....

Thank you again!!!
best regards from Lagos in the Algarve
