<T>Hi,

Hoping someone can help me. I'm a uni student in the middle of a major project and I've done heaps of work but suddenly my .pne file won't open.

When I click on the file (1.6MB in size), as it opens I get a Warning message that says "Unknown Document Version (0.0) and then there's no content to view.

Is there something I can do to recover this?

Thank you for reading,
Loz,
Would you tell us:
1- What platform you are on.
2- What operating system are you using.
3- What version of Archicad are you using.
4- What versions of Archicad are available to you.
5- What version of Archicad could the file in question have been created in.
Thank you,
Peter,

Thanks for responding. The answers to your questions are:

1 - Apple iBook
2 - Mac OS X10.?
3 - Version 9 Student version
4 - Versions 8 & 9
5 - Was created in Version 9

The file was saved each time to a USB Key and that may be the problem. My other files on the USB key are fine and I can see both the .pne and .bne files but I get the message after it attempts to load.

I've tried copying them to my desktop and accessing them from there but I get the same error message.

I appreciate your assistance.

Loz,
First, what are these file extensions .pne and .bne ?
I have never heard of them.
I have heard of .pln and .bpn.

The only possibility I can think of is that you are trying
to open a project created and saved in AC 9
with AC 8.
AC 8 knows nothing about a later version and you will
always get this error message if you try to open a project
or a library part saved in a later version.
Try opening the project in AC 9 by launching AC 9 then
go to file-> Open existing project and find this project and open it.

HTH and please let us know what happened
Thank you,
Thanks Peter.

I may have had the file extensions wrong as I was trying to do it from memory. I don't have my Laptop with me.

I'll look at that tonight and report back.

Thank you so much for the help.
Loz,
I'm sorry to say but if you are getting "Unknown Document Version (0.0)" your file is damaged. What you will have to do is get in contact with a reseller or GS OZ and ask them to send your file to Graphisoft for repair.

It's not certain that they will be able to recover all of your work, basically what they do is delete the damaged blocks from your file, this could mean that you loose days of work. I'm sorry that I sound so grim but be prepared for the worst, I hope that I'm wrong and that they are able to recover all of your work, but from past experiences be prepared to loose some work.

Cheers.
Peter and Ben,

Appreciate you assistance and comments. Peter, I tried opening in version 8 and 9 but that didn't work. I think Ben may be right.

I'd basically resigned myself to that anyway and started the project again and have almost completed it.

The lesson learned is to always have backups of your work.

Thanks again for taking the time.

Check the preference that gives you a copy of the last saved file. A corruption should only go as far as the lastest version.

FYI

PNE and BNE are the file formats for the Student and University Versions of AC these formats will not open in the regular (commercial) versions of AC. If you create a file in the commercial version of AC and then open it in the Student one it will be changed to the student version and it will not be possible to open it in the regular version again (even if you change the extension it will not make a difference).
Since Os X has the option of not showing the extensions of files it might be that you are trying to open the file using the wrong flavor of AC and this is why it is not recognized. Though it is a long shot since I remember that you get a warning that says that the file was created using the academic version if you try to open it with the commercial one.
