G-5/OS X Spinning Wheels

I'm not sure if this is the right category for this question, so please forgive if not...

I've been having a problem since I had the 250 GB extra hard drive installed on to my G-5 (which was not occurring before when using my original 30 GB hard drive).

For no apparent reason and when I least expect it, I get that little color spinning wheel appear while I am working on ArchiCAD or Photoshop which won't stop, nor will it allow me to force-quit the programs. The only alternative I have is to push the G-5 tower start-up button until it shuts down, or just pull the plug.

Yes, these are both huge programs, but this scenario is occurring way too often, & I thought moving them as well as installing OS X.4 there also) onto the new hard 250 GB extra hard drive would solve this sort of problems.

What am I doing wrong here?

this is probably not related, but I'll throw it in for consideration. I have been getting it a bit lately for no apparent reason, but I think it started with my last OS upgrade... 10.4.2. I have been waiting it out and have not had to force quit, but it takes several minuets, and this is relativity new.. AC9 has been rock solid until lately.

My G5 is up-to-date, has an extra 250 gigamegulon drive (almost full, already! Darn those internet movies!) and I have no problems with either ArchiCAD (beyond the usual frustration) or Photoshop (thank you, Adobe for such a wonderful product).

Your problem is probably where you are placing your scratch disks.

Locate both in the Preferences for your applications and make sure that they are using the new drive.

ArchiCAD says that it prefers the startup drive, but I have used an alternative location without problems.

Thanks, Dwight. It's nice to know there are other Mac-heads here;0). I agree that both ArchiCAD and Photoshop are the tops....it's just difficult at times to know how to get them to jump thru the hoops for us when we want them too.

I found the Photoshop scratch disk preferences and change all 4 of those to my new 250 GB harddrive as the start-up disk. However, I couldn't find anything about scratch disks in ArchiCAD 9's preferences.......can you tell me where those are located so I can change that too?

I found that & made the changes....so far so good and no "beach balls" in sight!
