Hi - with very latest graphic drivers, AC11 works on Vista 64 - but OpenGL performance still sucks quite badly for ArchiCAD and pretty much anything else - both speed and quality suffer, even on a high end machine. WinXP 64 is significantly better for OpenGL

Cheers
I suspect you may need to bite the bullet & either switch to an Ati card (Is it too late to return your NVidia, based on non performance under Vista?), or for best results switch to XP64

Depends how patient you are - it could be many months before a usable Vista driver emerges, assuming one eventually does (ArchiCAD is likely not on the list of applications that drivers are tested under)

Just to check the obvious though - as a test, you could try a fresh install of Vista on another partition, and install drivers from scratch, and thus test ArchiCAD OpenGL performance under a "virgin" environment

Hi Paul, I am using XP x64. Also AC 11 dose this on a XP x32 machine.AC 10 dose work on XP x64 but it also has a display problem of the screen blinks all the time, when editing mostly, in both XP x64 and x32 with Nvidia cards and ATI cards. I have never had a stable (screen wise) AC 10 or now AC 11. AC 9 was always trouble free, so haven't been impressed with the last two releases for me anyway. It is very annoying having to use AC with these issues. Don't know why and have run out of ideas. I thought the Quadro might have solved it with a different sort of driver but no change. Anyone with any suggestions or at least seen this behavior before?

Firstly, what CPU are you using ?
How much RAM?
Can you play new 3D games without problems?
Do you have an onboard vidio card on your motherboard, and is this safely disabled in bios?

Hard to know what is causing your problem without seeing this "blinking" and what you are doing when it happens, but typical troubleshooting steps I would use in this sort of situation:

Update your motherboard bios.
Then make a clean install of windows XP64, then install latest downloaded motherboard drivers and graphic card drivers, then install ArchiCAD - nothing else at this stage

If you still get blinking etc, then you may have a dodgy motherboard or faulty PCIe bus

On the XP x64 machine it is a core2duo E6600 with 4MB ram and a Asus P5W64 WS Professional MB. Doesn't seem to have onboard video. The same two problems happen on two different computers and the only thing the same on both is AC 10 and 11.It all started on my old XP x32 machine (IBM Pentium 4) that was blinking in AC 10 only. All other software Ok. So upgraded to the above for AC 11 and now blinking is not as prevalent in AC 10 but still there, and the above screen shot is only in AC 11. AC 10 is fine(doesn't do the above screen shot but still the ocassional blinking and slow down when editing) on the new machine. Another weird thing was in AC 10 on the old machine, it was the plan windows etc blinking, and Tool boxes, Navigator etc fine. Now in AC 10 and 11 on the new machine it is the Tool boxes, Navigator blinking and the windows fine, except for the above screen shot only in AC 11. Tried the Standard AC 11 WE, Reinstalled AC 11, no different. Is there any way to test the motherboard and PCI Express Bus?

Hi the specs of your machine look easily ok. Major slowdowns under 10 I also get (to the point where I cannot even select multiple objects in cross sections) - and also sometimes under 11. I also get 2D graphic corruption if two sessions of AC11 are in use - but not this blinking phenomenon (I am assuming you arent just seeing screen regens or guidelines appearing & disappearing?)

If the same phenomenon was seen on two entirely different machines, one is forced to conclude either this is an extraordinary coincidence, or that there is something about the project or libraries or add-ons in use, or possibly there is some common service or driver or other installed software on both machines that is interfering somehow. If you tried on a genuinely fresh install of windows , you should eliminate that last possibility though.

To test the most likely scenario first - unload ALL your own & others libraries and add-ons, save the project in that state and exit. Reboot windows before restarting & testing again. before loading ArchiCAD unplug the internet, and disable virus checkers & everything background process you can that is not a critical system process.

Libraries & addons can have a significant & unpredictable impact on performance/behaviour for less than obvious reasons. Load only default GS library, making sure the library path is to the correct version. If problem now gone, gradually reintroduce your other libraries one by one, until problem happens again.

If it happens even using only default GS library, don't test using your current project - especially if it was created in an earlier AC version.

Instead create a fresh blank project after doing a "New & Reset" and use defaults for everything - use the multiply command to copy lots of elements around to make it fairly complex/realistic.

With all of the above done, do you still get the flickering? and only in ArchiCAD? If so, we are drawn back to hardware...

If you can play current 3D games without a problem I would guess your graphics card & PCIe bus are ok in themselves, but to test for compatibility issues you could try swapping hardware - eg try another graphics card on your motherboard, then your graphics card on another motherboard

Try a different video lead to your monitor, and try a different monitor if your whole display is flickering

All very time consuming, but sounds like you will need to be methodical to narrow the culprit down.

- I hope somewhere in there something helps!

MAJOR PROBLEM IN XP64

I have just found a major problem using AC11 in XP64.

The steel section library parts (W Beams 11) are not working correctly. When a different size is selected the dimensions fail to adjust to match the new size. When I close and reopen the dimensions (in the settings dialog) they become editable!

The net result is that the steel parts cannot be relied on to make an accurate model in XP64!

There is no problem in either OSX or XP32 (we don't have Vista to test).

I assume that there may be similar problems with other library parts since it seems to be a problem with the execution of the code.
