OS 10.4.3, ...problems anyone?

Well, I took my G5 into the hospital this morning.

It's not rendering. (Will do Open GL rendering.)

Naturally I forgot to run Disk First Aid and just went straight to the Emergency Room. Then it occurred to me that I'd just downloaded Apple's OS 10.4.3 update.

Anybody else having problems rendering after downloading 10.4.3? Anybody else rendering nicely under 10.4.3?

I'll know more in a few hours, but thought I'd ask the obvious question while waiting. At the Apple Store we checked ArchiTalk, ...nothing yet. Guess I'll have 'em test the hardware before I reinstall 10.4.2.

I know that 10.4.3 has some OpenGl driver issues, specially with Artlantis (you will not be able to see cameras or lights on the 2d view to move them) and there are some display issues with SketchUp (uncheck the hardware acceleration setting). Have tried all rendering options in AC and they are working fine except for the zbuffer which is very slooooowww.

To the extent that I use it (lightworks engine) rendering seems to work fine under 10.4.3. Sounds line a specific video card/driver issue.

Well, Apple diagnostics show no "hardware" problems.

The slow rendering persists. I don't think it's corrupted library parts because this is a recent problem, though I may test 'em one at a time.

We reinstalled ArchiCAD, no pick up. Others have said 10.4.3 works fine for them.

I do not claim to be a wizard and really do need some ideas.

What would cause a new Dual 2.7 with 5 gigs ram to be so slow so suddenly? Why aren't the fans churning and the processors cranking out fast views?

Karl Mead alerted us to a Mac OS X 10.4.3 OpenGL problem documented by at least one third-party developer:

... There are a variety of problems from the 10.4.3 update for both ATI and nVidia cards with Sketchup, an OpenGL-based 3D modeling package. There are some work arounds for Sketchup - turning off "fast feedback" and using the ATI Displays download has allowed some users to regain functionality. There are several threads on the Sketchup forums about this issue. So far I have chosen not to do the upgrade fearing problems. The publishers of Sketchup, @Last, have posted an alert on their front page:

MAC USER ALERT!

Dear SketchUp User: The release of Apple's update to OS X 10.4.3 has caused some problems for a number of OpenGL applications including SketchUp. If your video is driven by:

ATI video card: You may see extreme cases where dots follow your cursor when using tools like the Pencil tool in larger models. Or you may see things like lines that are drawn by the tool don't seem to be at the right depth. In both of these cases, the issue can be fixed by turning off fast feedback: SketchUp pulldown menu -> Preferences -> OpenGL -> uncheck "Use fast feedback"

nVidia video card: You may be unable to see geometry as it is drawn in large models until after the drawing action is complete - e.g., no rubber band stretching of an edge with the Pencil tool. This issue can be fixed by turning off fast feedback as mentioned above. You may also not be able to see the selection boxes when using the Select tool. Unfortunately, the only fix for this issue is to turn off your video card's hardware acceleration: SketchUp pulldown menu -> Preferences -> OpenGL -> uncheck "Use Hardware acceleration" These are the issues which have come to our attention, but there may be other problems. Unfortunately, the Apple update has caused problems for a number of other applications that use OpenGL. @Last is working with Apple to hopefully have Apple issue a fix as soon as possible. In the meantime if you have not already updated to OS X 10.4.3, @Last recommends that you refrain from doing so temporarily.We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Excellent, useful, feedback Chazz. Thank you. I shall uncheck "fast feedback" etc. in SketchUp. And, ...I'll be in touch with "Macintouch" right away.

But, my problem is with ArchiCAD, and others are saying that they have had no slowdowns in their renderings.

Is there something like "fast feedback" in ArchiCAD that may need unchecking?

Sarcasm noted. I only posted this because there is a probable link with the Open GL changes that are part of 10.4.3. These in turn are affecting your GPU drivers. The problem is a level BELOW Archicad even if it only appears, in your world, to affect ArchiCAD.

It may not be information that helps you, but my guess is that it is information that IS pertinent to your situation.

Remember, others report fast renderings in 10.4.3.

Is there something in ArchiCAD itself, or in my Mac, that I should "uncheck"?

No one in this thread (probably no one on this list) is using your fancy new hardware. As I said, the issue is between the GPU drivers and the changes to Open GL handling in 10.4.3. Your situation is fairly unique.

Have you updated the drivers for your ATI card(s)? Have you tested rendering with each card? I assume you have one card driving one screen. That means if you move the rendering window to a different screen, the work is being done by the card driving that screen. Are you sure that NONE of the rendering window is spilling onto the other screen? And why in tarnation are you running OSX server?

We're just using the G4 as a server, but not running server software. We only have two computer work stations in this office and both "send and receive changes" to the G4. This way we can work on current jobs when the other guy and his laptop are out of the office.

On my system the one graphics card runs both screens, 128 MB ram each, I've assumed. Hmmm. The card is new and came with the G5 itself. I've assumed they were in sync from the beginning.

(This fancy new hardware replaced that G4 "server" which I'd upgraded to 1GHz from 350MHz.)

I'll check Radeon website for driver updates. (I didn't know cards HAD drivers.) Wouldn't Apple inform us of a need to upgrade graphics cards with our OS upgrades, or just test our systems and upgrade 'em for us automatically? After all, the system came from Apple.

We didn't notice the slowdown immediately after upgrading to 10.4.3 but, then again, I'm not sure if we rendered anything at that time. We couldn't render because of the "Connection Errors" we kept getting in ArchiCAD and Plotmaker. (See the other thread.) Graphisoft helped us solve that one.

The Open GL 3D engine works fine. It's the formal rendering operation that's so slow. How they relate, I have no idea.
