You can if you create a layout page in file "b" that links to a view from file "a".
Then you can use that layout page as your reference.
In file "a" create the view for what ever it is you want as the trace (plan, section, elevation, detail, etc.).
Of course you will need to save file "a".

Now back in "b" place a drawing on a layout.
i.e. one way is to right click in the layout and choose "place drawing".
You will have a choice of an internal view or an external source.
You will want the external source.
Then simply go browsing for file "a" and choose the view you want.

It's easy, but I don't see why you can't trace from another files viewset. THAT would be too easy.
No stuffing around creating temporary layouts etc...
Yeh, would that really be that hard for G.S. to make a temporary (I'll call it a "container") from another pln view for Trace Reference to grab/reference?.

What the heck we bring them into layouts now as external saved views anyway.
So we don't have to do the " stuffing around" thing:--))))
