<T>Can anyone explain to me the benefit of being able to 'select' an object on a locked layer ?
Being able to snap, yes, understandable, but other than that it is just down right annoying.... Particularly when working with complex terrains in 3D.

from Vectorworks to Archicad in a week...</T>

It does seem a little strange.
The only reason I can think of is that is still allows you to copy the selected items.
You can then paste into another job.
If pasting back to the same job you either have to paste into the Archicad layer or create a new layer.
Or of course you can paste into the same layer but you have to unlock it which defeats the purpose.
Thanks Barry.
A few odd surprises during my transition from Vectorworks.
Similar to 'where's the hidden line 3d view setting'....

It also allows you to open the dialog box for the element to see its attributes, but the "OK" button is grayed out, so the attributes cannot be changed.
You can also find out how many instances of a certain element you have, regardless of whether they are locked or not.
Like one day I selected all Columns and there were almost twice as many as there should have been. So I knew there are many duplicated I need to find and delete.

Many thanks for the replies.

Surely if 'Layers' was a separate palette/window always open on the desktop it would solve my concerns and still achieve all your suggestions.
Just a thought....
