Search the web for "cad step file converter", there are some free converters into dwg and dxf, maybe others, I didn't look too far.

<T>Hello:

I am new to Archicad and I have been learning all about it. To start I thought I would create a new building based on a building I had done previously using a 3D modeling software. What I can't seem to figure out is whether or not Archicad allows users to import 3D data from other mechanical CAD software using file formats like Step. My version of Archicad is R13 with hotfix 6 and is the 64 bit version. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I don't think a STEP file can be opened in ArchiCAD.

The closest are 3DS and IFC.

Check the following section in your ArchiCAD Help file:

Interoperability > File Handling and Exchange > File Types Opened by ArchiCAD
