Exactly how are you copying from the 3D window ?
You must use the "flat marque" and copy a region
of the 3D window then paste into the plan then
delete the lines and fills you don't want.

<T>I’m having trouble copying and pasting the shadows from 3D to the 2D planview to create graphic for a shadow study. When I paste it only shows up as a bunch of random dots. However, when I paste the image into a word file (as a picture) it appears normal. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

Any ideas? Thanks. - Josh</T>

I found the problem. Evidently, what I pasted into 2d was defaulted to "Air Space" which shows as empty fill. I just needed to select the area of the image I pasted and change the fill type. Thanks, J
