It's not the greatest solution, but when I was first using the 3D document tool I'd copy and paste everything 100' to the left to get a 2D version of the document to mess with and clean up. I've since shied away from that.

If by easy, you mean ....

1. Open up 2 copies of AC
2. Copy from HOST file
3. Create NEW INDEPENDENT DETAIL in new file
4. Paste detail
5. Create VIEW (or set up clone of details folder)
6. Reset VIEW SETTINGS for proper scale and layers, etc.
7. Repeat x100 for each of the details...

Then YES!

Otherwise, this has been a VERY SORE spot for me and one that seems like a no brainer. I've longed for the day where I can keep an OFFICE file of standard details and INFUSE the ones I need into each project..

I DO NOT buy that placing a VIEW of it from another file is good workflow.

If we can get this kind of ability and the ability to dumb 3d Documents down to LINE DRAWINGS, I'd be a happy camper.....
