The only way I can make it do this is to have a transparent material on the back surface of the wall.
Transparency is on in 3D and in the opening setting under "Model" the wall opening surface is set to "Same as wall side"
Also does the same if set to "Same as wall end" and you use a transparent material on the end surface of the wall.
Looks like it is a Bug. If the wall has an override that is transparent (Air) then even if they are not activated the empty window will cause the wall to become transparent.

Changing the overrides to other "fixes" it.

In a Composite/Profile, any opening where the surface is set to "Same as Wall Edge" will always use the edge/end overrides of the Wall - regardless if the override is on or off. Unfortunately we are unable to show each skin of a Composite/Profile within an opening's reveal as you might expect which is why we decided on this workaround.
This is not a composite or profile it is just a regular wall.

Ah yes, I see that the Empty Opening doesn't behave like other openings in a Basic Wall, you are right.

This bug is not fixed on 4020.
If the wall has an override as "AIR" or similar transparent fill even though the override is not activated the wall "thickness" will go transparent if you insert and empty window or door.
