One of ArchiCAD's great strengths is its versatility. It is possible to do an entire project with 2D drafting - quite efficiently for drafting even. (I've seen it done more often than you might imagine.) It is certainly easy to do a quick sketch or layout as you describe.

quick 2D drawings

<T>Had an interesting discussion with a colleague in the office this afternoon. He is considering a change from Microstation to ArchiCad. But, he is very concerned that BIM systems don't allow very quick 2D scribbles. We have a contractor using Revit in the office and he insisted on creating a model first - even when my colleague only wanted a rectangular diagramatic plan with 6 lines to show stairs. He made noises about the advantages of 6B pencils when the pressure is on to produce a quick, sketchy plan-only proposal for an impatient client.

I assured my colleague that ArchiCad does have enough tools to produce such quick diagrams (and I suspect that Revit has too). But does he have a point?
