USER ORIGIN

Hi, I am new to Archicad. I am doing an exercise where I have to draw a wall from a user origion say x=29 and y=10. For some reason the user origion keep jumping on me. I tried to drag it back and it jump even further. I opened up the tracker and changed the x and y to 0 still no luck.
If someone can help, will appreciate.

Do you have grid snap on inadvertently?
Watch out for the "S" key, if that is what the problem is.
Or;
View>Grid Snap Options>Snap Grid
You can change the "hot" S key, but you have to do that with keyboard shortcuts.
Options>Work Environment>Work Environment>Shortcut Schemes>Keyboard Shortcuts>Then View>Grid Snap Options.
Then set to some other less likely (by accident) key combo.
(Stupid "S" key) must cost millions lost productivity $ world wide.

Maybe it just seems to jump further, if your zoomed in more?
Have you clicked on the Origin button (one click only) and then set it where you want it after turning off Snap?

You might want to consider adding specs to your "Profile".

Thanks for the quick response. I had the grid snap off and also it wasn't the zoom.This must be something to do with "S" or God knows. Can you please tell me what kind of problems can be caused by the S key ?.

P.S. Do you know how to delete the User origin totally ?

By default it turns Grid Snap on/off.
It's a really really dumb default setting that GS should have fixed looooong ago.
That's why many users set it to some other combo of keys.

If it's not the Grid Snap, I don't know what it is.
Someone else will have to chime in.

Is your most recent back file also doing this?

It sounds like you may even be getting confused between the project origin, user origin and edit origin?

Maybe searching for those in the Helpm menu is a good idea? Otherwise how about including a screenshot to illustrate the problem?

The wall setting is 10' height and 9" wide, but when I draw, it looks like a line, you don't see the thickness of the wall. how to fix that . Thanks

I forgot to ask. My grid is pretty dense, you almost see a white screen. I have the main grid spacing at 4'. Still hard to see. What is the best spacing for the main grid ?

Hi agian ! How do you save a screen shot ? I have another interesting question about copying to 2nd floor w/o using the copy and past command, but I want to show you some screen shots.

Get screen view how you want it and hit the "Print Screen" on keyboard.
Usually upper right area.
Open you image editor and past should be available (or use Ctr V) to paste.
Then: "Save As"
Even though I have current Photoshop suite, I use Pain.net for this, as it's way faster to open and use if you not doing advanced manipulation.

Sam,

As far as I am aware, you can't "drag" the user origin. You use the
coordinates palette and place a new location for the user origin.

So, that raises the question: what did you do when you said " I dragged it
[the user origin] back and it jumped even further"? I can't figure out what
could be behaving that way. Sounds like a zoom issue, maybe.

Please try and describe that particular action of yours in a different way or
use more detailed account of the exact actions and sequences performed.
When you hover the mouse over a tool its name appears, tell us the
names of the tools, etc that you are using.

The fact that your grid is 4x4 and appears dense, tells me you are zoomed
out too far. Use the "fit in window" zoom to move in to see only the items
you have placed. Note: fit in window won't help if you have some outlying
object placed beyond Timbuctoo, in that case use the scroll wheel to zoom in closer.

Provide that screen shot Link asked for and try the above.
Please indicate your version of AC and OS in the signature line of your profile.

PS I'm a bit confused, how you can have a dense grid, but see an almost
all white screen? Go to >View, >grid options, >grids and background,
and change a few settings just to see what is going on.

Don't forget to re-key Shift+S too, for 'Change Grid Snap States'. That's the one that toggles between different kinds of snap and is another easy way to turn it on.
