My mistake. I saw the "Free Rotate in 3D" feature listed as its own new feature in the list on this page:

http://www.graphisoft.com/products/archicad/faq.html

Not clear that it applies to only one tool.

I would hope the Free Rotate in 3D applies to more than just the shell tool since one of Graphisoft's major initiatives in 15 is to enhance the design process in the 3D window.

The Free Rotate in 3D command is available on the Pet Palette in 3D.
It can be used on Curtain Walls, and now with AC15, on Shells.
It is not available for other element types.

that is very disappointing for All archicad users i loved this waited version i can not believe this that we do not have further editing in 3d
i hope Graphisoft know that the better thinking for architectect and academic students come from 3d modelling first more than 2d editing because switching from 3d to 2d much make me dizzy
please do something or inform graphisoft
Thanks anyway for all help you presenting to us before

No, only Skylights can be placed into Shells.
The Skylight Tool has been reworked and improved to work well with Roofs and Shells. It will also have its own Dimension Marker and MVOs. It is also displayed as true vertical projection just as the Roof/Shell it is placed into.

Lazlo you are probably sick of questions. I am sure we will all find out soon enough when it ships. So no doors or windows in shells. Ouch.

Now I'm suspecting the 3d planes only allow certain elements to be placed? For instance can I create a non orthogonal plane and draw a wall and then place doors and windows in it?

Similarly can I place objects on these planes?

If not...I'll be gobsmacked!!!

That plane in 3D is actually called Editing Plane.
By default it is a horizontal plane and it is shown at the base height on the currently selected tool.
So if the Wall Tool is the active tool and its base height is set to 3000 mm then this horizontal editing plane will be shown at that height.
The fact that this editing plane can be set to any position in space does not mean that now we can place any element in any plane.
The two element types that can be placed in 3D at any orientation are the Curtain Wall and the Shell.

On the ArchiCAD 15 product page you can view the 3D Interactions videos and you will get a pretty good idea of what the editing plane is about:

Yes, it is true that the Shell tool is most closely related to the Roof tool.
However, its geometry has much more capabilities. Not fully free form, but quite capable.

Wow. I am still shocked.

The "gotchas" might be worse than I thought.
That only the shell and curtain wall can use non orthogonal workplanes is like missing 101 in modeling.
.
I think I will refrain from any more comments till the software ships
