AC15 has some great new tools and features. I've always modeled a lot in the 3D window.
- The new reference plane which came with the MEP tool is now in archicad. It is adjustable and lets you place it where and at what angle/plane you need it.

- the shell tool, finally we are no longer limited to basic shapes and geometries. It's fun sketching/designing in 3d. I've been able to create parametric shapes easily and quickly. It's limitations right now are edge handling and inability to place doors and windows in the forms. You can place skylights. Current design trends blur the distinction between wall and roof so hopefully this will be addressed quickly. For now, just place a wall in an opening and place the d/w in the wall.

The renovation manager, long overdue, works really very well. Instantly the need for dedicated layers to distinguish between existing to remain, demo and new is gone. E,D and N are set by each element and display is controlled by the renovation status. You will need to redefine your views with the reno status, but it so much simpler to work.

I particularly like that in renovations when a door or window is replaced or eliminated this is now set by the element status. For example if you are replacing a door, you set the existing reno status to demo and then in the same [exsting] wall place a door with its reno status set to new. You don't have to cut out the wall around the door and duplicate the wall so you can put in a new door. The reno feature handles this. A drawback is that as yet, you cannot separately set the reno status for frame and door.

I also like how it handles door/window openings. You don't have to cut out the piece of wall a demo d/w sits to demo the entire wall and put in a new wall in which to place the door. You can put a demo d/w and a new d/w in the same wall and the renovation filters handles the rest.

The renovation status greatly facilitates presentations when you need only flip through the different filters to show existing, demo, after demo and new. This is a big hit with owners and contractors and ye olde bosses.

IFC is also improved, which is so important in the big BIM picture of being able to exchange data with the rest of the team. but that's for another post.

It looks like with the shells I'll be able to model the last few things I couldn't figure out how to do with complex profiles. Very nice.

And no-loss autosave? I like that. A lot. No more freakouts from coworkers about losing work. Until they mess up their backup procedures.

I'll keep an eye for future videos about shell capabilities, but my guess is that if AC had some other major improvements, they would be shown right away... so with that said, while it looks great to have new modeling tools, as far as I've seen, they are still DUMB modeling tools. What good does it do to model the USAFA Cadet Chapel in that way if I later realize I need to change something in the first pyramidal shell? Erase every copy->edit->multiply->edit->multiply->edit->multiply->multiply->rotate all over again each time a change is needed?

Don't get me wrong... the new tools and options are great, the upgrade is far better than AC13+AC14 combined; but since AC has always kept an eye on Auto*** like forever for tools and improvements, why haven't simple relationships been made between elements <S></S>**cof cof walls to next level minus floor thickness cof cof**<E></E>? I mean, auto*** implemented simple paramateric relationships between elements since... what? v2010?

I would have expected at least some kind of instancing, or true bi-directional dimension associativity. The shell modeling tool takes us a step closer to modeling freedom, and I know we will all see great uses of that, but can I convert that shell into a curtain panel system? What ir the change freedom of the completed object? These are the questions to be asked at the same time we jump while cheering new tools.

And don't get me started on GDL.....

Anyway, I'm happy the way things are going, even if it means waiting <S></S>another<E></E> year to see the modeling toolset completed (because we all know improvements are made over two versions).
Best regards.

One small detail that has been underrated, and has a huge impact in the way I model (using SEOs intensively), are the connection grips. These small gizmos appear every time you select an elements that operates or is operated by a SEO (or a roof cut), and lists the element that are related to it.

You can even isolate those elements in the editing window, and manage the relationships directly through the produced list.

The connection grip lists all associative connections the element is involved in, including Trim to Roof/Shell and Join Wall to Curtain Wall operations. All these can be managed from the connection grip.

Just wait and see if it actually works in Teamwork

I have <S></S>never<E></E> had an autosave recovery successfully maintain its link to the BIM Server in AC14 - they always comes up 'Detached', and often with more out-of-date elements you've been working on than the Reloaded project gives you ....

AFAIK that is fixed in 15. Turning of the TW remotely, turning Off the TW Host, having one TW project connected to one BS and another TW to a different BS on the same computer at the same time and copy/pasting between the projects and no crashes, or becoming detached.

One problem with Autosave in TW during the Beta is that it is instantaneous so if you do something that crashes AC going back to the autosave will probably be no help. In those cases I have just deleted the Autosave and kept working without loss of data.
