I am finally converting over from AC9 to AC10. I am also starting a Multi-family 4-Plex project in which I want to use Multi-story hotlinked Modules. Is this ArchicadWiki article still valid with AC10?

Also are there any other links/tips that anyone can recommend?

I will use SEO to "cut" the walls, and the roof can be on the same story as the cut walls, yet I believe that it is best to not have the module file contain any Exterior walls and place the Exterior walls in the "Master" file. Any thought would be appreciated.

There has been lots of discussion of this in the past...but briefly...

The most versatile method is still to publish the modules from the source file and link them individually into the master/site plan (or whatever). This allows precise control of layers, placement, etc. and provides semi-automatic updates (kind of like publishing PMKs back in the day).

The multi-story method in the wiki is really a substitute for the "Save as" library part option. They both have advantages and limitations but require the most manual updating.

Hotlinking directly from the PLN is the most automatic but may require some fancy footwork in the layers and layer combinations.

Whether to put the exterior walls in the modules or the main file depends on whether they vary within each unit type. It's easier if they are truly identical stacking parts, but quickly gets complicated if there are variations.

Another way to handle the SEO issues (besides putting the roofs on the same story - which I am generally loathe to do) is that you can apply SEOs to a module (even using another module). In extreme cases this can lead to overwhelming the SEO function but I have done some pretty complex operations without problems.

Hi, I am currently working on a 14 unit - project that's made up of 3 separate buildings. Since the 3 buildings share a lot of common elements, I decided to do them in one file, buildings.pln. Stories 1-3 for building A, 4-6 for building B, and 7-9 for building C. Each building had first floor, second floor, and roof floor. I had modules of kitchens & bathrooms that get plugged into all the buildings.

I first tried the multistory hotlink - and it works fine, but since I have 3 buildings in one file, I decided to just hotlink each story separately to the Siteplan.pln file. I only had to do it 9 times - which is not too bad. I also re-did some of the cross-story seo operations from the 3d window, which wasn't too bad either.

Now what I have is a very 'live' hotlink between the buildings and the site - that will update very quickly. In the siteplan file, I have a siteplan view that is brought back into the buildings.pln layout for final output.

Don't know if this is the best method or will apply to your case, but just thought I'd share. I'm open to any suggestions as always!

Dennis - Thanks for the post. You are becoming a helpful asset to the Forum.

I was going to attempt to re-post this post on a less busy Topic area. but think it still is lumped in with Working in AC.

Does anyone else use multi-Story linking? And specifically with 2 to 3 story mulif-family residential?

Does this also mean that I can have my roofs in the host file, and apply SEO to the HLM file?

Further to this discussion:

Take a look at the attached image - this is my Host file. As you can see the Walls are not trimmed to the roof EXCEPT for ONE wall. All trimming was done with SEO, in the source file. The Roof objects are on the same level as the Wall objects to trim. Does anyone have an explanation?
