Doesn't the xref insert feature do something different with the DWG layers? By inserting the DWG as a drag-n-dropped file....you have more layer control? Is that right?

I recommend you link the DWG in using the XREF feature instead of the Drawing tool if you are referencing a live, open file. You will not get the error messages then. I will check with the team here to see if it is a known limitation with linking open DWG files as Drawings.

<T>please advise GS?
what gives when an autocad DWG file is being used (in autocad) and that same file is being used in Archicad 18 as a "trace reference" DWG inside a worksheet?
I get these error messages?
please advise.</T>

Other way around.
As an XREF you have all the XREF layers listing separately that you can control individually (see attached image).

As a drag and drop (or placed as drawing) you only have the one master layer that it belongs to so can only turn that on or off.
Ahhh...ok. Got it. Thanks for clarifying that. I'll reset the DWGs to be "xref inserted" rather than drag-n-dropped......see if that removes this issue.

I am wondering what happens if you select the placed DWG Drawing in the Worksheet, go to the Drawing Settings Dialog, and check the Manual radio button in the Identification panel of the Dialog.
I can imagine that with the Manual setting ArchiCAD does not have to have constant access to the DWG source file and it can be edited by another application.
I unfortunately cannot try it as I don't have AutoCAD.
