Dear David,

Thanks a lot for your time replying me. I probably need to find some good tutorials to find out how to do it faster. I spend a lot of time editing the guidelines.

<T>I have followed help tool in ArchiCAD but it doesn´t help. There it seems so easy-just to type the dimensions I need. But it doesn´t work.

All I want is to create a steel column (here is called a "universal column") with a different width than it is in default but it doesn´t allow me to. What do I do wrong or don´t get? Please see the file attached.</T>

Lia:

You have chosen the Complex Profile option for the Column. Custom Profiles cannot be smaller than the original Custom Profile it is based on (they can be larger). In your screen shot, the size (261 x 276) in the upper right of the column pop-up list is the original size. You can edit the original Custom Profile (using the Profile Manager) to be as small as the smallest column you want to use, or create a new Custom Profile again at the smallest size. You can also look at the Import Standard Steel Profile... command to import a different size column.

You should add a Signature to your Profile (click the Profile button near the top of this page) with your ArchiCAD version and operating system (see mine for an example) for more accurate help in this forum.

There is information in the Help files here: Elements of the Virtual Building > Construction Elements > Place a Wall/Column/Beam with a Complex Profile > Creating or Editing a Complex Profile Element. Your main concern should be editing (reducing) the Fill that is the steel shape to be as small as your smallest column. Then place the Stretch Lines as a bounding box to the Fill.
