You have already done it. Just copy and paste your lines showing what you want into a new Symbol line type. Set the gap to 0. Select the Scale with Plan option.

Be aware that your line will have to be offset by half its width, as it is created along the centreline of its entities.

Would have taken less time than it did to type this, but I live by the motto: <S></S>Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll steal your boat and drink your beer.<E></E>

So...which lines should I copy/paste? One short vertical one (1/4") and a diagonal?
How many of that particular pattern do copy/paste?
Also...should I draw those "lines" with lines or plines?

You can do it with one set of short and diagonal, or you can do it with more if you want. Symbol lines seem to stop anywhere along their pattern, whereas standard dashed lines terminate with a section of solid line. So the number of line segments you use will not matter for a symbol line type.

Lines work, polylines do not.

1. the linetype is WAY too small in the preview editing dialogue box.
2. I've tried changing/setting/adjusting the "gap" to ZERO, and the "dash" to 1 inch and nothing makes it connect, look like the linetype I'm trying to build.
I created a line similar to yours, but in Metric dimensions - 10mm x 40mm. Strangely I had to change the dash length to 0.4mm for it to display the right size, whether it was created from a 1:1 view or 1:100.

You've probably worked this out by now, but symbol line types get added to the bottom of the list, not in alphabetical order.

When I set the dash to 0.4mm that was 1/100th of the size of my symbol. I would have thought it would need to be actual size, not 1/100th. This did not change when I selected the line segments from a 1:1 view or a 1:100 view. This confuses me.
The gap setting should be 0 to get the segments to join and be continuous.

A couple of items I just discovered...

1. the "lines" you use NEED to be drawn in a layout (meaning a 1:1) scaled environment. that's why they were coming out tiny for me. Because I was trying to create the from a "model" environment.
2. The "lines" will only contain a node at the end and beginning. no other nodes will exist.

with regards to no.2 - wonder if I were to add "hotspots" would the line be grabbable by the points where it changes direction?

Things I found out:

1 - If you draw lines in Layout, based at 0,0, copy and paste into Symbol Linetype your new line type will be centred on the elements selected (left image).

2 - If you draw lines in Model, based at 0,0, copy and paste into Symbol Linetype your new line type will have the origin where 0,0 was (right image)

3 - If you draw lines in Model, not based at 0,0, copy and paste etc, new line type will be centred on elements selected, same as left image.

Still with both options the scale is wrong - had to make line length 1/100th of what it should be in order to get it to display at the right size.

No. You can pick up the line elements used with the "Copy" button in the Line Type setting, paste to a plan view, edit, copy from plan view, go back to Line Types and Paste back into your symbol line, but you can't edit directly within the Line Types dialogue.

I sure wish someone else would chip in and let us know why the scale is all up the spout - GS? Anyone? Is this a bug? Is it still the same in AC19? (I'm using 18 )
