Works as usual for me. This is going to be one of those things that makes you laugh when you see what your doing wrong. You have done this a million times and all the sudden you can do it right

Its probably already set to Use an Empty Opening which is why you can't select that option. Just click the wall.

I think the 'Connect > Create opening from selection' (right mouse click) is more for beams passing through walls and will create an opening object (the new opening tool).

If you want to to change the door into an empty opening you can use the button bottom left in the door properties dialogue (or as Steve has shown).
But it will still be a door and not an opening object.
Interesting.
This does nothing for me - the doors just stay as they are.

But I don't have the latest build (4018) installed.
I'm still using 4007 - will try and update later and will try again.
The function works with a morph (for example) or the Opening Tool Object to cut a hole in all elements that intersect it.
I will say no, so someone can hopefully prove me wrong. You would need to use the Opening Tool or some element that intersects what you want to cut like a morph. You can't do it with a beam, wall, column, door, window... unless they intersect, and if that is the case you would still need to use the SEO instead of Connect feature. ?? I am not 100% sure about that but it does make sense to me that something has to be making an intersect with what your cutting. I think the bottom line is that you do not need to cut openings from a door because the Opening Tool works so well for doing that.

OK, here's what I'm trying to do: I have a wall with openings and I want to place an external cladding. This cladding is a second wall placed outside with a small gap. I want to have the openings cut through the exterior cladding and adjust the cutting to the cladding depending on the size and position of the doors and windows that may vary. I can do this with the opening tool, but I have to manually resize and reposition the opening every time I make a change to a door or window. I would like to have this done automatically with associated opening to the specific door/window.

No you can't do that.
You can manually add an opening to match the window, but it will be independent of that window.

I am not sure if this will work in your situation, but you can merge the walls into one complex profile wall.
EDIT menu > RESHAPE > MERGE WALLS.

If you do this, be sure to save the 'Custom' complex profile with a name.

Barry.

One for the WISHLIST. I get frustrated carving up walls for different finishes, it would be great to associate a separate wall finish with a core structure without being tied to the core wall length & height. I would hope that any openings could adapt to the applied finishes.

If you make that outer wall by dragging a copy of the inner wall with the door in it, at least you will have openings in the correct location and they can be edited for size at the same time, individually, or in groups. It is just a matter of changing the outer wall type and editing the doors. Turn off the outer casing of the door of the interior wall, and turn off the inner casing of the outer door. Also use the empty door panel in the outside wall. Are you sure you need to be using two walls for this? Sometimes I do it, but it is pretty rare situation. Show us a picture of the wall assembly you want. Perhaps there is some clever way not to do it with just one wall ? The reason I have used more than one wall to model a Wall, is for the sake of some special Interactive Schedules. Not for the sake of graphics or geometry. Just curious about your wall.

Sounds a bit like my wish for Adjustable Wall Skins. Walls could be something you lock or unlock with a check box. Adjust/edit the skins and lock it back up. I have been wishing for that since before we had Complex Profiles. I was hoping the a Complex Profile could have its parts adjustable in 3D.
An additional feature I would like to have for walls would be elements like furring strips that are horizontal and/or vertical. And would it really be that difficult to make doors and windows functional as operators or targets with SEO ?
Don't forget we now have modifiers in complex profiles.
You can add a skin to a complex profile wall with a modifier for its height and or thickness.
Then in 3D you can stretch this on a wall by wall basis (all walls are controlled independently).
These 'modified' skins can be stretched to a zero value so they disappear.
For example you can have waist high tiling on some walls but not others - all using the same complex profile wall.
And door/window holes are cut automatically in the tiles.

As it has already been pointed out, there has to be a collison for the Create Openings function to do what is wanted here. A workaround could be to set the door with a Reveal so that the door actually collides with the other wall, use the Create Opening function and then move the door back to its original location. Maybe (hopefully) someone has a better option?

But i find it strange that there isn't a function for this, as it is for the Opening Tool. Definetly something that should be on the wishlist, in my opinion.
