topic Using stairs as SEO operator? in Modeling

<T>Forgive me if this question is answered elsewhere... I was unable to find it. I am designing a small house, which has a "U-shaped" staircase, and I'd like to trim the top of a wall to the bottom of the stairs, to box in the area under the stairs, I tried doing SEO subtraction, but nothing happened.. is this supposed to work? and if so, what am I doing wrong. If this doesnt work, how can I do this?

cheers,
