Thanks Ransom - I haven't downloaded yet (a long spate of deadlines), but will certainly be doing so...
But the question remains - why do we need to have this frustrating limitation? And the hope remains that it is fixed in 10 ...

<T>2172 for Mac can't access from the Open command the folders with a longer name (didn't check exactly what the character count limit is). These are folders previous releases were opening with no problem. The files open all right from the Finder, but don't want to even think what can happen with project libraries, or BG ArchiCAD.

The network is a 100 mb Ehternet with G4 and G5s on OS 10.3 and 10.4. The server is OS 10.3.9 using AFP over IP and the data is stored on an xRAID [whatever all of that means].

Anybody else had this big problem?</T>

It's 27 characters. I've complained to GS about it, and it seems that it is going to be that way from now on.

This was added in build 2172. Apparently long file names were causing some kind of problem somewhere,

Gee, instead of fixing the bug, let's just outlaw long file names and break even more stuff....
What happens when you open with 2172 or a future version a PLN or LBK created with the old version, which is in a project folder with more than 27 characters?

If you change the project folder name you need to relink all your hotlinks, Plotmaker drawings, and libraries. If you keep the old longer-than-27-and-therefore-now-unreadable folder name, do ArchiCAD and BGArchiCAD and Plotmaker still read all the paths somehow?

You cannot open the file as you cannot navigate past the folder with the long name. You can ironically, save to the longer name folder, but then you cannot access the file that you just saved.

You can still open the file from the Finder --which is not shiny clean, but clean enough if it saves you from the renaming-the-folder-and-relinking files-and-drawings-and-redirecting-libraries whole afternoon job.

So I was wondering if Plotmaker, ArchiCAD and BGArchiCAD somehow manage to keep the paths by somehow cropping the folder name internally, or if they will be giving me missing or deleted objects and drawings and hotlinks all over the place because they just ignore the 27+ character folder.

Not to be down on anyone, but don't you think that a file/folder with 27+ is a bit much?
I just had a quick look over my machine, and the longest filename i can find is about 18 characters.
If i want to write an essay, i'll use Word.
Yes it is a bit backward that AC wont support a long filename, i agree, but i think that having shorter filenames in a more organised folder structure would benefit your workflow anyway.

Not to be down on anyone...

I don't think the problem is for us and since I grew up using DOS 8.3 limit I don't have a problem with keeping it short but a lot of CAD "users" since Win95 got used to the idea of loooooong filenames.
Imagine my surprise when I couldn't import a dwg file from a consultant because he had written an "essay" for the file name. No error in AC just couldn't select the file for import, I was lucky to "guess" at the problem since AutoCAD could open the file without problems as did SketchUp, Illustrator and Vectorworks...

As for Windows to be unaffected it is not an excuse, what would happen if you would have to share a project between platforms. As I sometimes have to do.

WARNING
<S></S>Always remember not to exceed AC's 27 character limit...<E></E>

Let's not forget this new length limit is a change from previous versions of ArchiCAD. I am not sure what positive effect the change has had (though I would like to know), but the negative effects are obvious enough. Gone are the days of using the name+location of the project as the folder name for our CAD files.

I just found out that for browsing/opening/linking the long folder name problem can be bypassed by using a Finder alias (shortcut) with a shorter name for navigating into your file.

All the hotlinks libraries etc. seem to work fine also. I don't understand how or why this is supposed to work or not, but it does seem to work.
