You will need to provide more information, maybe even a screen shot.
What is not patterning?
You can have a cover fill in plan that has a hatch pattern.
Or your surface material can have a hatch associated to it but you need to turn on vectorial hatches in the section/elevation settings to see it there.

Using your surface settings:
Options => Element Attributes => Surfaces => [Roof Material] => Vectorial Hatching

Overriding your surface settings:
Roof Tool => Floor Plan & Section => Cover Fills => Cover Fill
