<T>There's a weird change of tone happening when I put an empty opening (arch) through this wall
Shadows are definitely off, no idea what's happening
Any thoughts?</T>

It could be the way the WALLHOLE or WALNICHE has been scripted.
There may be more than one and they may have different materials used in them?

If you change the wall edge to a different material, dos the opening change?
It may depend on how the opening id scripted.
Or can you control the edge material in the object?

Is it a standard opening object or one you have made?
Just the standard Arch Top Door Opening that I've used

There's no control of edge material, either "Same as Wall Edge" or "Same as Wall Side". Neither makes a difference

I am thinking it might be a bug to do with the OpenGL or curve resolution

Definitely something strange going on.
When I opened your file the shadows were on, but when I turned them off the shadow was still there.

In vectorial engine the shadows on the inside of the opening are different to those in OpenGL.
I would say there is something wrong with the OpenGL textures.
Just what I wouldn't know though.

Even changing the opening shape to different objects changes the side shadow.

Just thought I would try my opening object.
Perfect.

So there is something in the scripting of the GS openings that is causing the problem - but only in OpenGL.
I wouldn't have a clue where to start in their scripts.
Hi,

Has this been resolved? I just placed a new empty door opening in a new file, and it works just fine, so there must be something specifically about your file. If you still have this problem, could you upload your test file again, so that I can take a look and see if it is an error, or a wrong setting?

Thanks,

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply. I looked into it, and it is caused by a very specific combination of things in how the shading ("self-shadow") of the opening is calculated.

The shading method this object uses tries to make a transition between the shading of the curved surface and the shading of the vertical part. When calculating this transition, it takes the direction of the sun into consideration, and also the surface settings. The setting combination that causes this is the following:

the direction of the sun (Azimuth) is 178º

<S></S>

the Shininess of the surface is weak (should be around 40)

<S></S>

the Specular of the surface is too strong (should be around 25)

If you just change the sun direction, it should work fine, but then if you set it to a problematic angle again, this might happen again. If you change the OpenGL surface settings, then it should be fine from now on. This only affects the OpenGL engine, so these setting changes should not affect rendered images.

I hope these suggestions help, and cleared things up a bit.

Regards,
