I don't have time to fully explain, but what you are looking for is 'Hotlinked Modules'.
You save one group as a Module which you can place over and over again.
The thing is you need to edit the Module and not just the first instance (the original group) of elements.

You can save the module as an external file - making it easier to edit in a separate Archicad.
Then you just update placed hotlinks - it is not automatic - or you will be prompted to update if it is automatic - I can't remember as I don't use them much.

Or you can use the first instance of elements and re-save them as the same module, and then update other place modules.

When you create the module you will have the option to replace the selection with the module.
If you do this then you have to edit that module in a separate Archicad.
Or explode it, edit and re-save as the original module.

As I say it can get a bit involved and I don't have time to go into all of the complexities.
Have a look in the Archicad YouTube channel (link in HELP menu) and I am sure you can find some videos in there.
Maybe even the Archicad tutorials will be good to go through.

I guess so - I haven't used ACAD since R14.

Archicad can also use XREF, but I think it is more for those die hard ACAD users.
