Elevation Fills Not Showing Correctly

Think I found a bug but I would love the community to see about recreating it.

If you create an elevation where some elements are cut and others are uncut, only certain vectorial fills will show on the uncut elements. For example, I created a slab with a building material of Concrete, using the Lightweight Concrete fill. It does not show up for an uncut element but does for a cut element.

However, if I change the "uncut" Concrete surface to have a fill of brick-common bond, the fill shows just fine. Likewise, Wood 00 shows just fine. Most all other fills do not show up on the uncut surface.

If I push the elevation marker through that uncut slab so that it becomes a cut surface, all fills show up.

I have tried virtually everything I could think of to resolve this to no avail.

I did end up getting what I wanted by using Graphic Overrides to specifically mandate that the element ID of the slab showed the Lightweight Concrete fill, but it seems a bit silly that I would have to do that when the fill should have been shown correctly in the first place.

The first thing that comes to mind is to check your Building Material definitions. See attached screen shot. Although this building material has a fill defined for the CUT surfaces, the surface material itself does not have a fill associated with it. Until there is a vectorial hatch associated with the SURFACE, no fill will be displayed in elevation.

Thanks Richard. I re-read my original post and perhaps I should have been clearer. If I set the surface to use the common running bond brick vectorial hatch, or wood 00, it shows up, but setting it to lightweight concrete or virtually anything else did not.

Definitely a good thought, but I think this one is a bug that needs to be verified by the community.

What I was saying, essentially, was that only a FEW surfaces have a fill already associated with them. Clearly, your running bond brick and wood 00 do, but most do not -- at least out of the box -- which is probably why you don't see anything for most building materials. Building materials have TWO places to define the fills: one for cut planes, and one for UNCUT planes. (see my screen shot) The UNCUT fill pulls its hatch from the surface definitions, which usually don't have a fill. I doubt you have found a bug.

Unless I'm missing something, I think you are not understanding my post.

1. The building material has both a vectorial hatch and a surface setup (I created a custom surface)
2. The surface has a hatch specified

If I set the hatch of my "custom surface" to be either brick running bond, or wood 00, I see the hatch in the elevation on an uncut slab.

If I set the hatch of my "custom surface" to be lightweight concrete, or virtually any other hatch besides brick running bond or wood 00, I see no hatch.

I am not talking about changing surfaces to one that has a different hatch. I am talking about changing my custom surface's hatch.

Sure. Here you go. While I realize you both seem to be looking for me to be doing something wrong, has anyone tried to recreate the issue and verify if it's indeed a bug?

It's probably unrealistic to expect folks here to spend time trying to recreate your issue, since most are clearly not having this problem. If you truly believe this to be a bug, send it in with your plan file to tech support with a description of how to recreate the problem. That's what they are there for. It's hard to troubleshoot without the actual plan file. We are just shooting in the dark.

Based on your description, though, it sounds more like user "error" than a bug, because the problem is unlikely to appear with just a couple of selected fills but not others. (No fill is THAT special.) There are numerous places to look: graphic overrides, renovation filters, section/elevation settings related to uncut elements, and probably a few others. For example, I note that your surface hatching is set to "Element Pen" rather than a designated pen. What are the surface fills that "work" set to? Setting it to "element pen" can sometimes generate unexpected results when the element pens are being manipulated behind the scenes by GO's, renovation filters, etc.

The other surfaces are also set to element pen and like I said, with a graphic override forcing that hatch to be shown, it worked just fine.

All I was asking for was someone to create two slabs and an elevation that cuts through one but not the other. Set them both to Lightweight Concrete as the hatch on the building material and surface and see if it appears.

You can keep trying to blame "user error" all you want, but all that has been suggested are things I specifically pointed out that I already looked for in my original post.

OK, thanks. Even when I turned overrides off the hatch doesn't work for me on the uncut surface.

You could create a simple file which is simplified down to the elements necessary for the issue to appear and save it as a PLA, then put it on Dropbox or some similar site. Then we can download it and take a look at it.

OK, your concrete surface has a hatch pattern.
Can you show a screen shot of the building material please?

I have tried to reproduce your problem but I am not having the same trouble.
