The interesting thing is that the "Expert" workspace is the one that looks the simplest. A minimum of palettes, all toolbox tools available, maximum screen area devoted to your workspace. And all commands available (at least in menus).

I feel like Djordje, this should be the default. The most efficent way of working must be to start with this and then tweak your settings if you like. And as it looks so simple, it should be the ideal way for newcomers to the program. You're not overwhelmed by all the palettes that are open by default in AC8.1.

When installing AC9, my recommendation is to start with this one. Regard the other delivered workspaces as examples on how you're able to tweak the interface if you like.

check your work space settings.

In the US version there is no "expert" option.
You have to choose "US Standard Command Layout Scheme" under "Command Layout Schemes"
Thanks for all help! I applied the "expert" scheme adn got my Modify Wall option back. Of course i'll have to re-apply my tweaks. As for now, i don't have time, but at least all commands seem available again.

I think it's ridiculous that you have to do this. All commands should be available in all default configurations, although perhaps hidden in sub-menus and such. I did not choose "expert" from the beginning because I don't regard myself as one. Now I realise that everyone has to start with the "expert" mode before customizing your interface, otherwise you don't know what you're missing. THIS SHOULD BE EXPLICITLY STATED IN THE INSTALL DOCS!

Thanks again!
At least you have the expert option. In the US version you can choose between:
Standard 9
US Basic User Preference Scheme 9
US Standard User Preference Scheme 9

And do not get me started on the layers. There is no "lines" layers with those schemes but there is "A-NPLT". Layers should be simple and there is a reason why a lot of people have their particular settings instead of adopting the US Global CAD settings. What I teach my students is that the layer scheme they use has to comply with the following condition: To be simple and logical enough that if another person uses your drawing he can figure it out.
The A-NPLT name is based on AutoCAD's old 8.3 limit naming scheme. Anyway now I have to spend some time tweaking AC again.

Eduardo,

here in Sweden we have a so-called standard called Point. It's name is based on the most wide-spread Autocad application, which largely still is based on the old Autocad 12-14. Multitudes of layers, all with incromprehensible eight-character names, with POSITION-BASED coding on top, like this:
A-----E-
A-37-EA-
A-45B---
A-46---B
And they're all BYLAYER on top of that. And furthermore, a lot of public institutions, authorities etc have the good taste of breaking their own laws by requiring architects to deliver all files in "Point-compliant" format.

This of course requires Autocad. Their resellers have had a lot of people travelling around the country to talk them into that. Now, it becomes embarrassing for them, because architects using ADT or Revit can't deliver that either.

Still it's fucking shit in my opinion. So don't complain. I think US Global CAD is a mild mediterranean evening breeze compared to this <E>😉</E>

i would say that they are an evolving species anyway . . . new things learnt, new features, etc, etc all go toward a continued development of the way you (and i) work.

i'm sure graphisoft will continue to support work environments, build new features (where applicable) in . . . don't forget: you can export it (either the whole profile, or scheme-by-scheme) and take it with you cross-office, cross-platform, cross-upgrade . . .
I think the new Work Environment feature is great even though I have to redo my keyboard shortcuts. I usually like to revisit this with each new version anyway, and the redo is only a small part of the work of setting up the new environments. The ability to save, share and transport the WEs is really great.

Let us assume that Graphisoft understands this and will continue to support the feature for the foreseeable future. If, for some strange reason, they make us all redo our WEs for version 10, then we can scream and shout and stomp our feet with rage. I don't think this is going to happen though.

Of course there may be some adjustments that we will WANT to make in order to make the most of whatever the new features are.

Thanks. We received the software for 9, but the documentation was back-ordered.
There is another one called "default" in addition to the other three. I'm assuming you found the three settings in the opening dialogue box. I found the default setting enables you to display a multitude of toolbars, but toolbar>display was not available with at least one of the other WE settings. I wonder what the differences are between them, without trying them all out. Anyone know?
