is there any way to create a canted wall with one end that is not squared off? i need to have an angle at one end of my wall. i tried adjusting the wall to a line, didn't work. also tried the geometry methods, but it didn't seem to be quite right either. maybe i don't understand the geometry methods?

Without seeing anything specific, wall irregularities are best created with a Solid Element Operation.

If what you want is to have the end of the wall not be square, there are a couple of tricks.

1. The old fashioned way; zero-thickness wall placed at an angle on the end.

2. Clean up (miter) to a wall on a hidden layer.

3. Use the wall end tool. If what you want is not already in the library, the GDL for this is probably too much to get into. Wall end scripts are a bit weird.

what i have is a canted wall that needs to have an angled (almost mitered, but not quite) end to it. i tried the seo, nothing happened. just beeped at me. i tried selecting a wall that gave the right angle and intersect. again, nothing but beeps. and i tried the wall end tool. still beeps. if i were to use a zero thickness wall, can i give that an angle so that it's canted? there must be something i'm overlooking. also, i placed a roof on it. and hit trim to roof. the roof has no overhang, it's flush with the top of the wal. instead of a nice squared corner, it cut the roof short of the wall (to the inside edge because it's canted, i wanted it to line up with the outside edge)?????

What do you mean by a canted wall and how are you achieving it? SEO's are not visible in plan (trim to roof is, sort of). The beeps suggest that you are trying to do something that is not allowed for whatever reason.

For copy/paste you can just use the marquee tool on AC. BUT for this forum you need to save a file to upload so you need a screen capture utility. There is one called "Grab" that is included with your Mac. It should be in the folder: Applications > Utilities. The forum is a little stingy with file size so make sure the image isn't too big (it may take a little practice) I think that up to 500x500 pixels works without any trouble.

ok, i think this will work. i used the accessories, canted wall to make the canted wall. here it is in plan. the canted wall is the one going up and down the screen (the big blue mark). i need that furthest end to be filleted with the wall that coming in to it (there is an empty opening at the joint right now). i have to post a picture of the roof/wall separately. any ideas?

second, here is the roof that i put on the canted wall. the outside edge of the roof is lined up with the outside edge of the cant. i did a trim to roof and this is what i got from that. any ideas?

You have a pretty tricky situation here. The wall accessory will not (AFAIK) allow you to intersect the wall as you wish. The best I can think of (not knowing your level of expertise) is either to make separate elements for plan and 3D (fills & lines in plan, SEO's for a 3D element), or to make a library part combining the two functions into one element. Unless you are comfortable with GDL (or have the time and interest to take it on) the former solution is probably best.

Did you align the edge in plan or in section/3D? There can be a discrepancy since the roof is placed by its lower surface but displays the upper one in plan. I recommend using SEOs (Solid Element Operations) instead of "Trim to Roof" unless you are having problems with the SEOs. They can get troublesome in complex situations, but yours does not look overly complicated.

i'm at a total loss here. i've tried many things. i can get it to work with drawing a thick wall with the roof plane at the angle i need. i use the SEO and it looks great. then, when i erase the roof plane (my cutting plane) it goes back to a fat wall. can anyone help me figure this out? i've even tried to make it easier by only needed a cant on one side with a straight (perpendicular) side on the other. how in the world should i do this? it's driving me nuts!

Marta, SEO mods are not permanent. You cannot erase the operator, it has to stay, but you can put it on a hidden layer. Also, if you move the object or the operator individually, the result will change. You can group them to avoid theis problem.

that works for the model, but in plan, the wall still looks thick (it doesn't show the that it is trimmed by the roof plane). how would you work around this? would you turn it off in plan and just use lines to show it? it seems like there must be an easier way to do a canted wall or a wedge shaped element? thanks.

OK.
The plan view in Archicad is symbolic, it's not a true cut through the model at a certain height. Thus it shows all placed objects on a storey in their entirety until you use items that obscure or hide others.

So you have to work around. (Use the workaround tool, as Dwight would put it.)

Either you make a 3D cut through the model, take a top view of it, export as a scaled drawing, save that as a module and import and overlay it on your present floor, or you edit the floor plan view manually, using white fills, lines etc. The help files will do so.

Problem with these methods is that you'll have to re-edit manually when something changes.

It's a long-standing wish to allow either 2d element layers in the 3D views, or section views that could rotate in 3D, or a way to generate a true horizontal cut section within the plan view.

Personnally, I'd like Graphisoft to unify the windowing system - all views of the model should be created equal, and then you should be able to customize them as you like, making them plans, sections, cut-throughs. perspective views or whatever, with or without 2D embellishments and text, and they should still be "live" and active and cross-update whenever you edit something elsewhere, to your liking. This is the one aspect of Microstation that I still miss.

However, I wouldn't want them to remove the symbolic plan view. It's an excellent work environment, fast and graspable for my limited brain. And it's not available in Microstation!

from what you said i gathered that you are trying to fillet the two together so you need to use the intersect tool under tools. you will need to select both walls and then click intersect. it should do the hard part for you.
