Hi!

I'm working with CI Cabinet Tools and trying to model a custom fluted cabinet. I managed to create a basic cabinet with straight wood tambour, but I’m struggling with the fluting.

I attempted to achieve the effect by creating a slab and using the Fillet/Chamfer tool, which seemed like the easiest, most intuitive approach. However, instead of applying the curve where I need it, it modifies the opposite edge (even in 3D view). I also tried adjusting it in the 3D view without the fillet/chamfer but Archicad seems to restrict where I can place the angles.. I don't understand the limitations in such a robust software. I also don't want to go back to revit or sketchup to do this simple thingsince I already am on subscription on archicad.

Does anyone have advice on how to properly model fluted details in Archicad? Example below

I would not model to that level, I would use surfaces with appropriate hatch patterns and textures with normal maps and bump maps for rendering.

if you were to model to that extent you would quickly make a model unusable with millions of unnecessary polygons.

I don' understand the problem with the slab you describe but for the cabinets

I would probably used a custom cabinet door.

For walls I would have used a curtain wall with a half rounded profile with a relevant scheme without gaps.

You could use a railing with round balusters for creating the fluting. This way you can easily control the size and spacing.

Nice detail for renders!

PS it is also possible to make the frontpanel with as a railing

Niiice! I will try it! Is possible to make there just half of the flute (half diameter)? If not I guess I have to attach flat panel on backing on this.

It is more like how to create a flute since I can’t do it with the slab. The problem is that archicad is very limited to what I can do with the slab in 3D view it wont let me go only im a few directions (not vertical one), it allows some type angles but not from every angle and I’m unable to basically do full bullnose with it or flutes…. I don’t understand why there isn’t a better way to do this,…

Once I am done with the flutes, then I’ll save it as cabinetry front.

Is this going to be heavy? 😩 I don’t like using textures also because I need to show profiles/details, but I’ll have many of these either (just one cab)

I have to disagree about Archicad being limited in this case.

You have several solutions for what you want to do.

It is a matter of workflow

Ok I’m loving it!♥️😁 Thanks so much I will check it our right now.

quick question , do the flutes add a looooot of polygons? I don’t mean to use it on all cabinets, but just wondering if it’s heavy heavy.

Would I be also able to create something like this around island ? So fluted circular wall?

Curved is possible >> add posts with the same complex profile to fill the gaps.

It is not at all heavy (heavy). Only not recommended if you make whole buildings of it.

Each flute has about 40 points.

Other than details if for some reason you are doing full cabinetry detailing and are needing to draw every flute, a texture will be substantially more efficient. For rendering you can include a Displacement Map which will create facet free curves when rendered.
