I am not sure how you can offset multiple objects, but if they were originally on the edge of the line, you could first change their anchor point before changing their dimensions so that they keep to the relevant line.
Thank you Lingwisyer!
This helps a lot in this case.
But I would still like to know if there is anything else that might be closer to what I was looking for.

You could try magic wanding a polyline to the slab edge, trim as needed and use special distribute on the collumns with the polyline as a path, but I am not sure if they would rotate as needed.

Hey Erwin,
sounds good, but this is what I get when I select the 'existing line' for the special distribution.
It's like only one segment of the polyline can be selected as the path.
Am I doing something wrong?
From experience, the path selection will only select vertex to vertex within a single object most of the time... So with continuous lines it will only pickup a single segment, unless I do a region next to it...

I have no troubles distributing along paths. It should work as described earlier, please see the following screenshot. Theres are circles, polylines and there is even a slab edge with distributed columns. Resize probably won't work here, because there is no common centerpoint for your geometry.

Distribution (multiply) along a path works fine.
But to use the distribution tool to distribute existing elements will only use one segment or edge of the polyline rather than the whole polyline.
Ok thats true, thanks for correcting that one.
Maybe the OP could start over and use multiply along a path with his/her new columns?
