Special Menu?

Is the special menu gone? It appears in the WE lists but I can't seem to get it to appear or use it's functions.

In Windows I activated the Special Menu with the Registry Editor. When ArchiCAD starts it nowhere to be found.

However, I do see the special menu when quitting the application (after dismissiong the save dialog). I don't know where to look to activate it in the WE editor.

Its a lot like looking at something you consider valuable disappearing down the drain.

Any suggestions?

There was such a topic several months ago -try to search for it.

i have no idea if there are any 'developer tools' for the PC that will edit your preference files. i think you need to look in the registry somewhere . . . as i mentioned, the above link was for the mac . . .

"work environment" - archiCAD 9. lets you completely customise your menus, palettes, tools, shortcuts, etc, etc . . .

The first thing i did was regedit.
BUT special menu just wont show up.
I use V9 not V8.1

Attached is a step-by-step to show how to get the Special Menu to show in a work environment (after enabling it either by registry or by startup shortcut key). This is one of many variations on a theme ... and of course you can put Special Menu commands into toolbars as well, just like any other command. But, as posted in all related threads: use the Special Menu commands at your own risk! (Some, like "Show Pentration Lines", seem essential and completely benign to me.)

To add some words to the 10 steps (invisible step 10: click OK):

1. Create a new menu and
2. Give it a name (perhaps, "Special" 😉 )

[Alternatively, choose an existing menu.)

3. Once you have an actual menu selected on the right for building or editing, your options for "List" at left increase. Choose "All commands by theme". Scroll down to...

4. Special and click the + to expand the commands below, then

5. Shift click to select all of the commands, or select the ones that you really need (better option IMHO, but not shown here), and then

6. Click on "Add selected". The commands will show up in the menu on the right now.

7. These steps are essential ... otherwise all of this work will eventually be lost! Click on "Command Layout Schemes" at left, and now either click "Store As" to create a new command layout that includes this menu (such as the "Karl incl Special" layout that you see on the right ... which I had created earlier) ... or, to have an existing menu scheme reflect this new changes...

8. Click on an existing menu scheme and

9. Click on Redfine

10. Click OK (Or, perhaps click Export first if you want to move this updated menu layout to another computer, or to make a backup).

Thank You for the tutorial. This is almost as intuitive as the Calculate Menu! That's why it is so SPECIAL!

It just didnt cross my mind to look in the WE.
If you are used everything to be put there for you, then you need some time familiarise with the idea that you have to do it your self.

In setting up 10 special menu I am not seeing Show Penetration Lines, one of three that I used with confidence. [The rest I leave alone on good advice from those who know better..] Can anyone who's been there yet, a successful insertion of special menu, help me locate the equivalent setting please.

Don't tell me GS did such a fab upgrade, and got rid of something really useful from AC 9? They never would have done that, right?

Seriously Djordje, is there somewhere I can go, or someone I can pester to help me retrieve this invaluable tool?? This was a setting I left on all the time and I am really missing it. The 3D images are really funky without it, ESPECIALLY with the internal engine. Can't stand open GL..........too much like a game, not architecture. IMHO.

Does anyone or Graphisoft has some document for "how to use " them
I could not find anything in Archicadwiki.

While I agree that it's bad that it's gone, I think they have a purpose. Many more of these lines are shown by default in 10 internal engine, it seems penetrations are calculated with more precision than before.

Perhaps a tedious workaround, but in special cases you could use the solid element operationst to get this. Just make one element operate on the other, but don't hide the operator. That would essentially get you the same result.

they are hidden and 'undocumented' features for a reason - they may not work in all situations (ha!); they may be unstable; they may be commands that decrease the performance drastically; etc.... and you should use them at your own risk. try searching the forum here, you will see more discussions surrounding the use and abuse of special menu commands.

to give you some indication of what they do, you could look at the 'help' string attached to each command. if you select each command in turn in the menu scheme of the work environment you will see a brief description of what each is supposed to do . . .
