It shouldn't have anything to do with the Work Environment. It has to do with the Template you are using to base your new project off.

But after a couple of tests, it appears to me that you have found a bug! If you use Latest Settings it sticks, but not if you use a .tpl file or open an existing file with it unchecked already.

<T>I'm in AC 9 and find the Label Tool seems to have grown a brain of it's own in the latest incarnation.

It will not lay down the way I place it. Instead it will sometimes choose to lay on the opposite side and even when trying pull the text to the correct side of the label, it will usually stay on the wrong side.

How do I turn off the 'brain' it seems to have?</T>

I had the same problem. I haven't tested it thoroughly, but I think I fixed my problem by unchecking the option to "fix angle". It's not clear to me what that option does, but by default it was on, and after I turned it off, my labels stopped jumping around.

I think Robert has hit the nail on the head! 'Fixed Angle' does just that, fixes the angle - so that, for exmple, later if you were ever to rotate the whole plan, they would auto adjust their text rotation.

You can find the checkbox under the 'Text Label' tab. You probaly either want it unchecked all the time, which will make your text placement as predictable as you want. However your 'auto adjust' would not be effective.

Or you may want to keep it checked but set the angle as you place the label. While this may take a little longer, it would be both predictable and keep the angle. A good idea would be to do all the same angled labels in groups.

Better still, create favorites for each direction!
We are having a very annoying problem With the label tool. Every time we open a new session of AC9 the label tool defaults back to the fixed angle mode. Does anyone know how to keep the fixed angle check box - unchecked????

Use Link's suggestion: create favorites.
Ok, will create a favorite, but more to the point, shouldn't the software work? Is this a work environment problem? Does everybodys "fix angle" always default back to checked? If not, what are we missing. There has to be a simple fix that we are not seeing.

Every time we open a new session of AC9...

It depends what you are doing when you are opening ArchiCAD. Are you selecting 'Create a New Project'? If so, are you selecting Latest Project Settings or Use a Template, etc.

This setting is defined by the Project you choose to open or create. Give us some more information and we can get to the bottom of it.
We keep AC9 in the dock. When opening a new solo project (we use a template) or an existing solo project, we select the "last work environment used". We do not use teamwork. We have a saved work environment, and selecting this specific work environment does not solve the problem either. At ever start up of AC9 the Label tool defaults back to fixed angle.

I assume then, by your question, that this does not happen to you? If that is the case, maybe it is time we tried a reinstall of the software. I will try that first thing tomorrow as I have no time left today.
