<T>Can anyone tell me a method to put an area plan with level curves as background for modelling the terrain (with splines and then magic wand) ??? i heard that scanners do not scan images at their original scale....</T>

You can scan to scale - provided you know the scale of the original survey plan you want to scan. Decide the resolution, say 200dpi, scan, save as jpg and bring into archicad with the view scale set at the same scale The import figure tool will allow you to set the same dpi .i.e. 200 dpi. Then simply trace the contours.
