<T>I have used patches many times, but now for some reason, they don't appear. I used "place patch now", display options are
"by element settings", I see them in the patch folder, but can't get them to show up in the View Set. One does appear, but the background shows through. HELP, please. Maura</T>

Every patch has some options inside it. it is an object so after you open it you can set whether the background is opaque or not.
As for the disappeareing, check that the folder with your patches is loaded as a library container. Also check that the patche's layers are visible.
I do not use patches often, but I have found that exploding the patch can have some advantages. Exploding the patch will turn it into 2d elements that can be edited in Archicad versus having to edit within the GDL object. Explode, edit and lock. This may not solved your immediate problem but perhaps it will prevent it in the future.
