Make sure that the layout you want to place the view on is current.
Then, a square will appear; it is a placeholder, whose center is the center of the view. Snap it to the center of the sheet - or wherever you want it - and that's it.
Yeah. It really bugged me when I discovered that. Not a big thing, but it doubles a small effort and is certainly inelegant.

Where you notice it is in the detail sheets. If you drag multiple views onto a gridded sheet, they will fall into the cells automatically. Assuming you use an object in the detail window for the grid cell extents (which, IMO, you must), this is pretty slick.

But it doesn't work when you drag a single view! If the snaps worked, I might not miss it...

Altogether it puts us, again, right at 80%.

Yep - do that, too. Then when the drawing vew is actually placed, it puts it several thousand feet away from the sheet.

Now, if your view is defined miles off the origin, or if your model is miles off the origin, that might be the problem?

This might be it. How do you know where the origin is? Can you re-define it? Or do you have to move the entire model closer to it?

Any merged or XReffed DWG?

Nope - single pln created by someone else - way back in ver 8, though. Could 10 screw up the origin point?

Jeffe:

You need to move the model to the project origin. This can be done in one step by using the heavy marquee (works through all stories) surrounding the entire model to drag it to the project origin.
To restore the user origin to the project origin, double click the origin button on the Coordinate Box or toolbar. Zoom way out and you'll see it.

Or, as I've found with the odd DWG where the origin is so far away. I set the origin from the coordinate box then using the line tool, draw a line with x,y set to zero and drag the rubber band into view. Then select all and drag to where you want the model placed.

Maybe you're not using the Co-ordinate box?...

For Jeffe' & arki-beto I'd recommend checking the anchor settings of the drawings, especially after everything they've been through. Uncheck 'Use Drawing's internal origin as anchor and just select the center anchor method and snap it to the middle of the layout.
Well I'm glad it's always on, because the Tracker is by no means a replacement for it IMHO. But the Tracker does play a part in it...

Firstly, let's say the Tracker is not being used at all: If the delta sign next to any of the coordinates is indented, relative input is active. If the delta sign is unindented, absolute input is active. So to drag anything back to project zero, no matter how far away it is, all you need to do is unindent the delta sign next to XY, then initiate the drag by clicking the drag reference point, and then type X0Y0 enter. (Then indent the delta sign again to set it back to relative).

Secondly, let's say the Tracker is being used: You will need to check 'Show X-Y Coordinates relative to User origin in Tracker' in the Work Environment. Then use the first method, again making sure the absolute method is used, and since it is set relative to the User Origin, making sure it is at the Project Origin (by double clicking the User Origin button).

Whenever I hear someone drawing lines for anything apart from drawing lines, it sets my alarm bells ringing!
Thanks Link, quite aware how the coordinate box works with regard to absolute/relative.
And totally agree with your alarm bells comment. In fact I have no layers assigned for anything to do with lines/arcs etc!!
The sole purpose for my line is to get an idea how far the merged DWG etc is in relation to the project origin.
I've had files merged with the the project origin kilometers away.
