topic Regeneration time in Modeling

<T>I am working with two windows open, section and plan. When I make a change in the plan, and back to the section, it takes about one minute, 45 seconds to regenerate. Is this typical? I am using the Open GL engine setting. Is there any other setting that might have an impact on regen time?
This machine has a 64 mg video card. Does that have anything to do the time issue?
It is a section through a two story house. Not too complicated.</T>

My first question would be:

How long has the computer been running? It may be time for a reboot to clear the RAM.

My next question would be - do you have a particularly complex library part in the section? Or maybe 278 duplicate items?:-) Or maybe your section is infinite and you have a bunch of elements in the background that is bogging AC down?

Check those things and let us know how you go. In your Preferences>Imaging & Calculation you can check 'Write Report'. Next time your section ~rebuilds~, it will write a report that will provide some insight into what is going on. To view it, go to Window>Report. Maybe include the report if problems persist!;-)

Good luck mate.

Cheers,
Following is the report generated for the section. There are two generations. The first one has the vectorial hatch turned off. You can see the whole thing takes 15 seconds.
The second one has vectorial hatch turned on. The generation takes about a minute and a half. Of course, the obvious solution is turn the hatch off while working.
Question: Why would the sun direction have any bearing on the section if I have shadows turned off? It must refer to hidden polygon removal.

The pen number less than 1 refers to a pen I had set to 0, which is transparent. I guess AC doesn't like that too much.

Other than the above obvious turn off the hatch solution, any comments?
That should set the alarm bells ringing!;-) Seems you have ~plenty~ of cornice. You may want to use 'Check Duplicates'. This is an add on that is found in your ArchiCAD>Goodies folder - you can load it using the Tools>Add On Manager.
Checked the duplicates, had only three in the whole project. If every door, window, furniture, tub, etc. is an object, 290 wouldn't be too many for an entire two story house; or would it. I don't know what else they could be. I do have a lot of cornice work. Not more than 20 -25 pieces, however.
The time must be in regenerating the hatching.

Some objects, eg trees and vehicles slow the process down.
It looks like your pens settings need changing for your cornice object also. Select a pen from the AC pen palette at line 93 of the object settings.

OpenGL is not used in the section/elevation views and so has no effect there (AFAIK). The hatching always takes the longest and your report bears that out. Try the section without the hatching as a test. But, really, a minute and a half is not too bad.

To speed things up I usually distinguish between output sections with the hatching on and working sections (for editing the model) with hatching off. The output sections I unlink so that I can work on them without having to wait for the automatic regeneration and then batch process them when I need to. The working sections I just create and delete as I need them.

I'm trying to get some techniques established without the trial and error process to cut down the learning curve.

The unlinked section is still generated from the model (unless you don't want it to). Just go to Display > Section/Elevations > Regenerate... (there are several options here which will vary depending on what window is active). The only way that the sections become unlinked is that you can no longer use them to edit the model, they can still be as pure, clean, full BIM drawings as you like (there can also be some advantage that they don't have to, but that is another discussion).

If you want to edit the model in section view, just create the section you need. You can drag a copy of an unlinked section to create a new identical model view. Or you can just draw a new section limited to the part of the model you want to work on, which also speeds things up quite a bit.

Cut the unlinked section line from the plan and paste it back. However, you will lose the 2D elements you drafted on top of the model S/E, so first save that somewhere safe (e.g. to an empty storey or another empty S/E window).
