Thanks for the warning. I hadn't run into this myself yet.

<T>ArchiCAD should not allow Template files to be inadvertently overwritten. In the current version this is possible. I cretaed a tpl file by saving as and then closed it. I then "opened" this file via the File menu - as opposed to creting a "new" file from a template.

Saving this file overwrites the TPL file without asking me if this is what I want to do because TPL becomes the current file type. This is not a desirable behavior. There needs to be a dialog that confirms my intention with respect to this template file under all circumstances.</T>

Workaround:

On a mac, once you've finished working on the template, right-click on the file and Get Info. Lock the file with the checkbox.

Now AC will recognize that the file can only be opened as read only and it will ask if you wish to continue. File type stays as pln in the save dialog.

Locking the file does not affect the process of starting a new drawing based on the tpl file.

Surely there is a comparable system on the PC...

Good point Wes.

On Windows I'm pretty sure there is a way to set the file to read only, but I can't remember the details just now

Wes,

That's got it. On Windows, right-click the file and tick the Read-Only Check Box.

Thanks.

But could ArchiCAD do this for me? Microsoft Office does.
