It seems to be assumed that beams will always be overhead, although there are two pen choices that determine how it displays depending on the Floor Plan Cut Plane height. With a little adjustment you should be able to get each beam to display as desired but it seems to me that it would be best to have common settings for beams regardless of their elevation.
