I just tried the method you suggested. I didn't find a simple trim command in the SEO Menu. I tried intersection, subtraction with upwards and subtraction with downwards. None gave me the desired result. Parts of the wall were still poking through the stair.

<R>I'd like to create different niches in walls or cut out sections of walls altogether to allow some rays of sunlight to peek in. How can I break through parts of a wall? </R>

In the Window Tool, look in masonry->wall extras,
or in windows->openings.
First, I would like to know how you would like to be addressed.
Do you want to be addressed as arnold128 ?

Could you explain a little more about what you mean by
"place a wall under a the opening of a stair".
Do you mean how do you trim the tops of walls enclosing
the space underneath a stairway, or something else ?

Thank you,

There are probably numerous solutions to this one. Depending if you want to show a sloped stringer or articulate the riser and treads.

Assuming the later, one solution is to run a wall perpendicular to your treads taller than your highest tread. Under the Edit menu, select SEO command, and trim the top of the wall to the underside of the stair treads.

Hope that helps!

Anne,
Robert's method generally works and is the preferred method in
AC 8 and above.
The SEO is performed as a subtraction with upward extrusion
with the walls as target and the stairs as operator.
It seems that there may be something unusual in your case
since you are not getting SEO to work.
You might try the pre AC 8 method.
Assuming a straight run stairs, make a roof with zero thickness,
make the pitch angle of the roof exactly the same as the slope
of the underside of the stairs, in section, move it into place,
make sure the roof extends the full length of stairs, then
in plan or in the 3D window select the walls
and go to edit-> trim to roof.
Thank you,

Thank you both so much. I tried it again assigning the walls as the target and the stairs as the operator. This time it worked. I really appreciate you both helping me out. You instructions were very clear and easy to follow.
I use the SEO tool quite often, so I'm fairly familiar with it - BUT, I also have problems when trimming the walls under stairs.

The strange thing is it doesn't happen every time, and I can't find a common theme with the stairs that won't trim.

Does any body know if this is a known bug?
