Simple Sketchup Like 3d Views

I much prefer the look of sketchup models over the Open GL shading of Archicad. Has anyone ever requested that Archicad get a similar look in the 3d navigation?

Don't know if anyone has requested this before, but it definitely should be on the wish list.

Aside from Graphisoft not implementing shadow-casting - infuriating and regrettable, the closest you can come is to make translucent walls that simulate SketchUp's X-ray mode.

I talking mostly about SU shaded views with lines looking like hand pen drafting and the fact that they are live - not rendered.

Great Idea!!!

Sketchup OpenGL shows faces and lines from all angles very clearly. I have so much trouble making out how the building looks from the dark side of the model in AC.

Sketchup Xray is so much easier to understand depth than the OpenGl wireframe or solid option in AC.

Sketchup OpenGL textures are much easier to scale, rotate, and even "colorize". It is very hard to adjust textures in AC and have it show up in Open GL - because basically you have to render the texture w/ Lightworks, - save it as an image, then use it for OpenGL texture image. Why can't we have a "match internal engine" for Open GL?...

I think some or all of these imlemented in AC will make it so much joyous to work in 3d - not to mention the all-important open-gl shadows, of course.

I raised SketchUp line weight advantages back in July 2007. Not quite the same as shading, but certainly about creating clear 3D drawings. SketchUp has this well covered and i wish that ArchiCad could create something similar. Cigraph Archisketch gets closer but involves post processing an AC drawing. Having it integrated would be much more convenient.

I think, however, that there is another issue. Some, perhaps many, CAD users believe that the SketchUp style presentation is not longer required because it hankers after a past that relied on hand drawn drawings. They say that clarity can be achieved by using fills with the available line weight techniques. Things like over-shooting, backlining and other ancient techniques are, they say, 'old hat', time consuming and unnecessary. Maybe so - but it certainly produced clear and beautiful drawings whilst most CAD drawings are dull as dishwater! Maybe beauty, for its own sake, is no longer valued. If the majority of users feel this, Graphisoft is probably right not to focus on these issues.

Maybe users could present some examples of what they consider to be beautiful (and clear) CAD drawings?

The look and feel of the live SU 3d view is much more that a sketchy hand drafted look. Even if you remove end line overshoots or lines entirely it still has a better look and feel - especially the live shadows.

I often feel that I could easily export or link my Archicad model back to SU to get a better look and navigation.

Alternative 3D view methods - especially shadows - would be great inside AC of course. Yet another alternative to sending to SU is to save 3D as a U3D file for PDF.

Windows users can directly create an embedded U3D PDF; Mac users have to have Adobe Acrobat Professional, create a 3D viewpoint in a doc with the 3D tool and link the U3D file.

I had not played with this in a year or two - and was impressed this past week at all of the new features Adobe Reader (or Pro) have when opening such a file. Very much like SketchUp, with options for OpenGL textures, semi-transparent elements, lines only, sketch lines, shaded sketch lines, various lighting options (no shadows), and a live section mode much like SU. For the section mode, you open the section palette, select the axis, and as you drag a slider, the cut is dynamic just like SU.

In addition, you can display a side panel that shows all saved views - like tabs on SU, but no movie mode between them - and can make any selected surfaces invisible.

Pretty cool and fast for being free. Would be nice to have that kind of behavior inside AC itself. And live shadows.
