<T>Hello!

Apologies for the ambiguous subject heading..

Basically what i am attempting to do is take a logo and then 'trace it' (slab + space bar) in archicad as a slab - then save as an object in the right orientation to then use as signage on a building.

I am positive i have done it in the past but apparently my brain has copped out on me today - or else i have just officially lost it!

Any ideas if this is possible and how to go about achieving it?

Thanks for your time!

Hi Chrissy

If your logo comprises of just text, you can use "TEXT 3D" object in the standard ArchiCAD library.

However, if it is the actual graphic logo that you are trying to create, what you have described is the easiest way of creating it, I suppose (i.e. slab tool to magic-wand the outlines of the design, rotating it in 3D-axo view and saving it as a .gsm object).

Thanks Shingo!

Unfortunately it is not just text - i wish it were!
It is quite a detailed emblem for a school crest.

the slab tool to magic wand is the plan;
I just can't remember how to make the photoshop image regions (or logo edges) 'findable'.

Any ideas?

You'd need to get some Raster-to-Vector software to convert the image into 'findable' elements. And even then, it probably won't be such a great conversion.

I'd recommend scaling the image up to many times it's intended size, then tracing around it with 2D elements, like lines, arcs, splines, etc. Remember to copy and mirror wherever possible to save you time and ensure symmetry. Then scale it back down to it's original size and magic wand a slab onto it.

You could also do all of this in the Complex Profile window and just make a wall or beam out of it. That would save you having to make an object. Just a thought.

Cheers,
Yes, apart from the lettering and the flames you could mirror everything else, nearly halving your work.

However, Illustrator may produce good results. Will be interesting to hear how it works out for you.
I just did a nearly identical logo project last week. Illustrator is a good route to go but the issue is that you end up with either not enough definition of the curved bits or WAY too many nodes. In this case some judicious use of the magic wand settings will be required. Newer versions of illustrator work better (CS2 is much better than the predecessors). Note that all of this is much more doable if you have the file in a vector format to begin with (eps, pdf etc). Doing it from a raster is just a pain. I guarantee that somewhere the logo is available as a vector and it will be worth your time to dig it up. Good luck.

It shouldn't be that hard to have this logo on plan and draw slabs manually? Ok, it will take some time, but the work is pretty easy.
