The subscription is for 12 months only and starts 30 days after you sign the agreement. I would post my agreement here but it has some confidential information on it don't want to bother blocking out unless someone really wants to see it.

My point about the value of the promo items is that they are probably not much value to experienced users. I think that is most of us. May be not. I don't know.

If you have been using ArchiCAD for 5 years or so, when was the last time you needed priority tech support? Have you used it at all after the first year?

There are only a very few things an experienced users will pick up from the Virtual Tutor.

How often will you need the features the 3D profiler has which are better than the one we already have?

How much value is waving the replacement key fee if you don't lose your key?

The value of these things is subjective and would probably cost Graphisoft almost nothing if they gave it away free to any user who wants it.

You are correct, I am sure that up until now no one has paid full price for a damaged or stolen key. However, what makes me think things may be different in the future is the fact that Key insurance is even offered at all. Now that you have to buy key insurance, how much will it cost to replace a key if you didn't buy the insurance? Still $100.00?

If the cost of key insurance is the same as the replacement fee, what is the insurance for? Will we have to by the insurance each year too?

If you could get 10 and 11 in one subscription period you could cancel your subscription until 12 comes out. This could easily be 18 months or more after 11. Why pay for two more subscriptions during that time? more goodies? $1400 dollars worth?

Those who subscribed in June of 2005 will not get an upgrade until February or March of 2006. Their subscription runs out about three months later. Is 11 going to be out then? No way. If they want to get 11 at less than the future upgrade cost they will have to subscribe again. Will they subscribe again before 11 comes out? No! Why would they? The extra goodies?

The ones who got the worst deal are those who are subscribing after the $200.00 discount on 10 expired in October. I think they will get some goodies but their subscription will undoubtedly run out before they get 11. They will spend $1400 dollars to get 11 instead of $700 like those who wait to subscribe until 10 is here may be able to do.

For this reason I don't think there is any chance 11 will come out before all of the subscriptions that will get you 10 have expired. That would be around February or March of 2007. We will see.

Really? I found 3D Profiler extremely useful. ... or do you mean disappointed that is was the only addon? I only remember Profiler being in the list, not the "Accessory Pack" which contains the footing, slab, wall, & roof accessories.

Did we shoot our selves in the foot by subscribing early? Will our subscription run out before we get to use 10 for 12 months? Probably. I hope they will not start counting the subscription time before we get version 10. I hope their intent was not to appease us for this early subscription penalty with the promo items.
I understand that that the promo items may change or be added too, I got the Virtual Tutor (sorry but i don't think it is very useful unless you are new to ArchiCAD) and the 3d profiler. Nice tool but I still have not used it enough to see how it is any better than the profiler tool we already have. Priority tech support? Great for the first year. But now it is just something I hope I wont need to use. Key insurance? I have had my key replaced twice since version 6. No charge. Now it will cost $100.00

To buy ArchiCAD in the US now will cost a min. of $3,995.00 down +$57.62/mo. ($695.00/yr subscription) + Key insurance (nobody wants to pay the full price for the program if they lose or damage the key) + what ever add-ons you need.

What are the chances of ever getting rid of the dongle now that there is Key insurance? 0!

Is the key insurance going to be an annual fee now too?

Steve,

I think you're over-reacting perhaps?

For some time, the policy has been a $100 charge for a replacement key - either sending in the damaged one or a police report of the loss or theft. A defective key is replaced free of charge. So, the 'key insurance' basically waives that fee. I don't believe anybody has ever had to pay the full price for a lost/damaged key...?

The 3D profiler is quite a bit advanced compared to the built-in Profiler.

The Virtual Tutor DVD probably has something that most people can learn something from, other than advanced users.

But, the subscription 'package' deal (we're talking US here) is cheaper than an upgrade anyway, so everyone still saved money I think?

Does the subscription 'run out'? I don't believe it is a 12 month contract, is it? I believe it covers you until AC 11 is delivered. In any case, if it 'runs out', what does that mean anyway? You still own AC 10 just as you own AC 9 now...
The subscription scenario is coming anyhow. Everybody is going that route... Let's not kid ourselves: you pay now for an update that comes later, instead of paying after the update is released (which is after all costs are made by Graphisoft).

You have to take all costs into account: if a new version increases your productivity (which I think ArchiCAD 9 did), it pays for itself. I think that Lightworks rendering alone could justify the upgrade from 8 to 9.

Actually one of the reasons I chose AC over Revit at the time was because I didn't see any benefits of supporting Autodesk by subscribing. I can understand some of the benefits for some companies to be able to "budget easily for a new version of program X...". But lets be honest here, the real benefit for this type of program is for the Software maker not for the end user since they get to budget their profits before the product is produced. This scenario benefits the accountants since they know that they already have X amounts of dollars out of which we can spend Y (X - Profit) for the development of the next release.
Do i trust GS enough to bet that AC10 will be the greatest upgrade ever, that it will handle all the wishes in the forums and that it will not have to have any maintenance patches? I am not that naive. They will make the improvements that fit within their projected budget nothing more and probably a lot less (how many times has stairmaker been upgraded since it came out?) and since we already paid for the upgrade there is nothing we can do about it. Just picture that the subscription model had started with AC07 and you received 08.
I rather see what GS produces and if it is a worthwhile upgrade then I will upgrade if not I will keep my money and stay with the version that works and sorry to say this but I will also start to look at other options... A $200 savings and some freebies is not enough for me to buy a "Surprise Software Upgrade" box.

that's exactly my attitude. I'd like to asses the goods first and then I will make my decision. I suppose, we are all in a business, so we have to be able to take risks, so GS (or any software developer I should say) should...

You have to take all costs into account: if a new version increases your productivity (which I think ArchiCAD 9 did), it pays for itself. I think that Lightworks rendering alone could justify the upgrade from 8 to 9.

it's not so simple. LW wasn't the major feature that made us upgrade to v.9 at our office. it was actually new text tool and stability and I think we wouldn't have upgraded our software just because LW. Why? We've got guys trained on Artlantis and simply architects at our office don't have time to fiddle with that. However, I have to say that Dwight's book came quite handy and hopefully we will give LW a go, yet LW implementation in v9 is rather primitive and needs to be revised in some aspects but that's a different story....

LW 'could' justify the upgrade... Well, this depends on your office, obviously. To me, the new docking interface, the LightWorks rendering engine and the overall stability improvements and cleanup were worth the update.

Unfortunately we were forced to buy a new license after a key was stolen (not specifically but along with other items)

It is realy nightmare.
In my opinion AC9 is realy good upgrade. Select function, text, etc...
In AC10 the main theme is PM. At the same time it can be problem, because I like PM in a moment.
But regarding new rendering engine LW is quite strange. LW is independant softwar company like Artlantis.
Why don`t you buy LW as right version?
Or it is much better, full integrancy with LW-right version, compared to Allplan and Cinema 4D.

And upgrad CAD must be very considered. CAD-knowledge is very important part for architect.
That means the CAD-skill must be upgrade with CAD-software together.
That is the reason, why I keep always with new version, even though it costs.
To be a master for CAD-tool is very important basic skill as architect.
CAD is our thinking and our hand, and our presentation to the client.
Without this we can do nothing.

But, would you have paid for it beforehand without knowing that those were the features that are part of AC09?
